Handout: - Prepares a handout with a quize about writing formal letters in English. The quize consist of several incomplete statements. - Asks Ss to work in groups to complete these statements. Quize 1.You write your address in ..of the letter. 2.The address of the receiver should be written on ., starting below our address. 3.You can write ..on the right or the left on the line after the address you are writing to. 4.When the letter starts Dear Sir/Madam, you end it with 5. When the letter starts Dear Dr Smith, you end it with 6.It is not a good idea to usesuch as I’m or can’t. - Walks around the class to help when necessary. - Calls some groups answers in front of the class. * Introduce: the new lesson. - Remind some rules of writing formal letters in English. - Work in groups. - Complete these statements. - Write corrected answers: 1.You write your address in the top left-hand corner of the letter. 2.The address of the receiver should be written on the left, starting below our address. 3.You can write the date on the right or the left on the line after the address you are writing to. 4.When the letter starts Dear Sir/Madam, you end it with yours sincerely, 5. When the letter starts Dear Dr Smith, you end it with yours sincerely, 6.It is not a good idea to use contraction such as I’m or can’t. - Listen and prepare pre-writing Pre-Writing Task 1 Read the letter from a high school in Los Angeles and underline the sentences that express the following points: - Explains some new words and structures in sample letter. - Guides Ss to understand some stragies. - Asks Ss to read the sample letter and discuss the purposes of the letter in pairs. * The opening of the letter. * The ways the money is used. * The gratitude to the donor. * The donated amount. * The way the receipt is issued. * he closing of the letter. - Walks around the class to help when necesssary. - Suggested answers: - Calls some Ss to answer and give opinions of sample letter. - Corrected answer. Pre-Writing Task 1 - Read the letter and underline the sentences that express the following points: - Listen and copy down. - Write correct answers: * The opening of the letter. Dear Sir or Madam, * The donated amount. I am happy to receive a donation of $500 from your company some days ago. * The ways the money is used. The money will help us to repair the old school building and build a new block of flats for the handicapped students. * The way the receipt is issued. We will certainly issue a receipt as soon as possible. * The gratitude to the donor. I would like to express our thanks for the donation. * The closing of the letter. While-Writing Task 2: - Listen and read the instruction carefully. - Discuss the following couples/ group. - Write the letter in 15 minutes.
