Warm-up: (Questions- answer)
- In summer this year, a lot of Ss from universities came to Thach That. Ask Ss to work in groups of four to list what they did.
- Call representative of groups to read their list.
- Ask Ss to explain what we call the work they did. Give the answer if Ss can't to lead to the main content of the lesson: We call what the Ss did volunteer work.
+ Explain new word:

Pre-reading: 
*. Discuss the picture and saying:
- Ask the whole class to look at the picture and then ask questions for Ss to answer.
+ What can you see in the picture?
 What is the old woman doing?
+ What does the saying (Little Moment Big Magic" mean?
+ What does the picture tell you?
- Ask Ss to read the short poem and discuss its meaning in pairs.
- Give comment and explain the meaning of the poem. 
- In groups, make a list of what the Ss from universities did when they came to Thach That in summer this year:
- Give their answers:
+ They helped Thach That people clean the roads.
+ They helped the nurses in Thach That hospital to take care of sick people.
+ They helped poor children study English.

Instruction: Fill each blank with one part of speech of the word volunteer.
- Help Ss to distinguish the parts or speech of the word 
"volunteer" and write them on the board.
- Ask Ss to read through the sentences provided individually to identify the part of speech of the word to fill in each blank then exchange their answers with a friend to check.
+ The word to fill in sentence 1 should be an adjective.

Warm-up (8'):
- Divide the class into small groups of 4 and give each group a set of pictures and ask Ss to describe the activity in each picture in one sentence only.
1. The student is teaching the poor children.
2. The students are taking part in directing the traffic.
3. The medical students are examining the old people.
4. The students are taking care of the disadvantaged children.
5. The students are taking part in a Blood Donation activity.
6. Ss are collecting the rubbish.
7. The Ss are helping the soldiers to build/ upgrade the road.
8. The Ss are helping the examinees during the University entrance exam period.
2. Pre-speaking - task 1: (7')
 Instruction: You are required to decide which of the activities given are not volunteer work.
- Ask Ss to work in pairs to do task 1 and give the reasons for their choice.
- Call some to give answers and ask the class to give comments.
- Elicit other activities from the class.
 Answers:
Taking part in an excursion and participating in an English speaking club are not volunteer work because they do these activities only for themselves, not for others.
3. While speaking- task 2: (15')
Instruction: You are going to make conversations based on the given suggestions.
- Ask Ss to read the model conversation in pair first
- Then ask Ss to read the volunteer activities and what exactly to do in each activity and match them together.
- Explain new vocabulary:
 + war invalid: a soldier wounded in the war.
 + Martyr /ma:tә(r)/(n) = a soldier who died in a war
 + intersection (n) = the place where roads or street meet.
- Ask Ss to practise in pairs then call some to act out the conversations to check.
- Elicit feedback from the class and give final comments.
4. Post speaking - task 3: (12')
 Instruction: Now you work in groups to talk about a kind of volunteer work you or your partner often do.
- Read through the example given in textbook. Encourage Ss to use transition signals such as also, besides, moreover, etc to make their talk more coherent..
- Ask Ss to work in groups, talking about one activity they take part in.
 Ex: Tom usually takes part in directing the traffic. He directs vehicles at the intersections. Besides, he also helps old people and young children across the road. He enjoys the work very much because he likes helping people.
- Go around to observe and collect typical errors.
- Call some to talk about the work they take part in. 
- Elicit feedback from the class and give final comments. Write the errors collected on the board and ask Ss to correct and then give corrections if necessary.

Ss may not be familiar with the note-taking task,, so T should provide them some tips to deal with the task..

- Distinguish the sounds / w / and / j /.
- Pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds.
- Use gerunds, participle, perfect gerunds and perfect participles appropriately.

Ss may find it difficulty to differentiate between gerunds and participles, so T should be ready to explain.

GRAMMAR:
1. Gerund: (10')
- Review the form and use of gerunds:
* Gerund is the Ing-form of a verb used as a noun.
* Use:
+ As the subject of the sentence:
Ex: Studying English well help us easily find a good job.
+ As the complement of the verb "to be".
Ex: Her favourite hobby is reading and sky-diving.
+ Object for preposition ( follow prepositions)
Ex: She is very quick at learning English.
 Young people are keen on windsurfing.
+ Object for simple verb:
Ex: He doesn't like reading.
 She avoids seeing me.
+ After a number of "phrasal verb" which are composed of a verb + preposition/ adverb.
 Ex: to look forward to ; to be for / against ; to take to ; to put off ; to keep on ; ....
Ex: I look forward to hearing from you soon.
 He kept on asking me for money.
+ In compound nouns:
a driving lesson ; a swimming pool; 
+ After some expressions:
 can't stand; can't help; can't bear; It's no good/use; 
Ex: I can't stand being stuck in traffic jam.
 It's no use/ good trying to persuading him.
 It might be worth changing the title of the book.
