Warm-up:
What do the Vietnamese do on New Year’s Days?
What about the Japanese? 
Read the new words provided.
Explain some new words (similarities, fraction, broadcast )
Task 1
Ask students to read Task 1 silently
Have students listen to the tape twice and do Task 1
They put on special clothes. (ü)
Everyone cleans the house. (ü)
Bells ring 108 times. (ü)
Housewives prepare special foods. (ü)
They decorate their houses with kumquat trees.
They go to a shrine. (ü)
They give each other “lucky money.”
They drink rice wine. (ü)
They play cards.
They watch television. (ü)
They eat a special meal. (ü)
Correct mistakes
Task 2
Ask students to read the questions in Task 2 carefully.
Have students listen to the tape twice, then do Task 2.
Have students write the answers on the board.
Suggested answers:
Because they want to get rid of the old year and welcome the new one.
They hear the bells from television or the radio.
They wear kimonos or special dress.
No, they don’t. New Year’s Day is mostly celebrated among family only.
Correct mistakes
Ask students to work in pairs, comparing the following aspects of the Vietnamese New Year with those of the Japanese one.
