UNIT 7: WORLD POPULATION
Period 1: READING (cont)
I/ Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
Use the information they have read to discuss the topic.
Ss can base on the information in the passage to correct the wrong sentences.
Develop such reading micro-skills as scanning for specific ideas.

I/ Warm up:
- T asks Ss to play the game: “Tam Sao That Ban”.
- T devices Ss into three groups (each group have 5 Ss) and each group selects a leader to stand in front of the line. T tells Ss how to play the game.
- T lets the leader see the sentence which each group has to write on the black board. Which group finishes first is the winner. Which group loses, they will be punished.
- T lets the Ss play game. 
The secret sentence: 
“The population of the world has been increasing faster and faster”.
II/ While you read: (cont)
- T asks the Ss to read the passage one more again and then do the following exercise:
Find out the wrong word and correct it:
The population of the world has been decreasing faster and faster.
In A.D.1, there were 30 million people.
By 2015 it is expected to be over 7 million people.
Scientists give the same answers to the question: “Does the Earth have enough resources to support this many people?” 
Our resources are unlimited.
Some scientists say that we must increase population growth.
- T asks Ss to work individually and then exchange the answers to the partner.
 - T calls some Ss to correct these sentences and asks Ss to explain, show where the information is in the text. 
- Besides some incorrect sentences which T gives, T asks Ss to make other incorrect sentences and then asks other group to correct it (Group 1 makes, group 2 corrects. Group 2 makes, group 3 corrects. Group 3 makes, group 1 corrects).
TASK 2:
Instruction: You are required to read the passage and answer the five questions in the book.
- T asks the Ss how to do this task. If they don’t remember, T may instruct them to use some strategies to do the task.
+ First, skim the six questions to understand them and:
 ● Underline the key words. For instance, in question 1 Ss can underline what, population, 10,000 B.C, 1750.
● Decide what information they need to find in the text.
+ Go back to the first question and locate the information for the question by finding the key words in the passage and mark the place.
+ Read the part carefully to find the answer. Ss can use their own words.
+ Continue with the rest of the questions.
- T instructs the Ss to play “Lucky number” game:
+T shows a table which consists of 8 numbers. Five of eight numbers are five questions in the book. Three of them are lucky number (3, 4, and 8).
-T divides class into three groups and tells Ss the rules of game:
“Firstly, choose a number you like. Secondly, read the question in 3 minutes. If you can answer, you will get 5 marks. If you have no answer, others group will have chance to answer. If you choose a lucky number, you get 10 marks without answering. 
Questions:
1. What was the population of the world in 10,000 B.C., 1750, 1850, 1950, 1985, and 2000?
2. How many people is the world expected to have by the year 2015?
3. Lucky number.
4. Lucky number.
5. Can the Earth have enough resources to support its population?
6. Why can’t women in the world limit the size of their families?
7. Do most Third World women want to have a lot of children?
8. Lucky number. 
-T lets Ss play game.
III. After you read:
- T designs the activity. T shows the name of five countries and asks Ss to work in pairs to order these countries according to their population. Number one is the most populated country. Then Ss work in group and find where these countries are and which is the richest, which is the poorest of them.
Put the list in order by entering the number 1 through 5 in the boxes provided:
□ Indonesia
□ China
□ Brazil
□ The United States
□ India
- T asks the Ss to work in groups of three or four and put the list in order.
- T calls some groups to give the answers. Other groups listen and give some comments.
- T gives Ss some information about the population of these countries.
1. China : 1.400 million
2. India : 1.100 million
3. United Stated : 302 million
4. Indonesia : 245 million
5. Brazil : 189 million
- T asks the whole class:
“Which country is the richest?”
“Which country is the poorest?”	
VI/ Homework:
- T asks the Ss to read the passage again and summaries the main points. 
- Asks the Ss learn by heart new words and make sentences with them.
- Prepare for the next period: Speaking.
- End the lesson.
- Ss listen to the T.
- Select the leader.
- The leader sees the sentence.
- Ss begin to play the game.
- Ss read the passage.
- Ss do the exercise
- Work individually.
- Ss correct:
1. The population of the world has been increasing faster and faster.
