Unit 13: Hobbies Reading 1. Aims: Help Ss enrich their knowledge of some hobbies. Help improve their reading skill especially guessing and scanning. WARM-UP: Guessing names of hobbies *Swimming *Fishing *Stamp-collecting *Mountain –climbing *Playing computer games *Reading books *Watching TV _ Divide the class into 2 groups. _ Tick some pictures related to some common hobbies on the board. _ Call 2 representatives of 2 groups to write down names of activities with the correct pictures on the board. (The group which has more correct answers will win the game) _ Give feedback. _ Declare the winner. _ 2 Ss go to the board and write down the names of activities. _ Others look at the representatives and support if necessary. 2ms 5ms II. BEFORE YOU READ: a. Pictures: - Ask ss to tell the names of the activities in the book (page 146) b. Discussion: - Ask ss to work in pairs again, ask and answer about their own hobbies. - Call on 2 or 3 pairs ask and answer, may ask them to explain why they like most. 8ms 15ms III. WHILE YOU READ: 1. Task 1: Explain and translate words. _ Ask ss to listen carefully and pay attention to pronunciation and stress. _ Play the tape once. _ Ask ss read through the whole passage in silence and underline new words. The common ones he usually gives away to others or if noone wants them he simply throws them away. _ Listen and pay attention to pronunciation and stress. _ Read through the passage and underline new words. _ Work in groups. _ Find out correct answers on the table. _ Ask other new words in the text. _ Take notes new words in the text. _ Work individually. _ Work in pairs to compare the answer; practice asking and answering. _ Take notes and write down the answer in the notebook. 7ms IV: AFTER YOU READ: Talk about your hobby _ Ask Ss to work in groups of a table, each one will have to talk about their hobby in 5 sentences, using as many useful structures as they can. The others ask about his/her hobby. _ Call at random some Ss to talk about his/her hobby. Encourage them to talk confidently, and naturally, try to use as many useful structures as they can. _ Give comments and marks to the best. _ Work in group to talk about their own hobby (3ms) _ 2 ss make presentation about their own hobby. (3ms) _ Others give comment. (1m) V. Home work: Summarize the passage.
