More practice: Consolidation and Home work: - T gives 3 sentences on the screen and asks ss to do the task: Listen and pay attention to the sounds of the underlined words: 1. He stopped smoking. 2. She went to a number of shops and clubs in London 3. They were robbed last night. What sounds are we going to learn today? Answers: stopped - /pt/ shops - /ps/ Robbed - /bd/ clubs - /bz/ Lead in: In the lesson today, we’ll learn how to pronounce the clusters /pt/ - /bd/- /ps/ - /bz/ listen and repeat: - T reads the clusters once and presents how to pronounce these clusters. - SS listen and repeat the words in chorus after the teacher/ tape twice - T calls some ss to read these word again and T corrects if necessary. Practise reading aloud these sentences: - T reads these sentences or plays the tape once as model. - T asks ss to repeat in chorus once - T asks ss to work in pairs and takes turn to read aloud the given sentences - T goes around to listen and take notes of the typical errors. T calls on some ss to read the sentences again and provides corrective feedback. Presentation: - T gives examples on the board and elicits comments from the ss. Examples: The boy hit the dog in the garden. S V O Adv -> It was the boy who hit the dog in the garden . ( subject focus) -> It was the dog that the boy hit in the garden. (object focus) -> It was in the garden that the boy hit the dog. (adverbial focus) These sentences are called cleft sentences. *Note: Câu tách ( câu chẻ ) được dùng để nhấn mạnh môt thành phần trong câu ( chủ ngữ , tân ngữ hoặc trạng ngữ) . Những câu trên được gọi là câu tách vì từ một câu gốc ta có thể tách thành 2 mệnh đề , Structure: It+ is / was + focus + defining relative clause. * Khi muốn nhấn mạnh chủ ngữ ta đem chủ ngữ đặt giữa it is/ was và that .Ta có thể dùng đại từ quan hệ who( cho người) hoặc that : It is/ was + subject + who/ that + V +.. It ..my mother who helps me with my homework. a. was b. were c. is d. be Answer: 1- d ; 2 – c Exercise 1: (P. 152) Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentence: - T does the sentence 1 as model: 1. The boy visited his uncle last month. -> It was the boy who/that visited his uncle last month. - T gets ss to do the task in pairs in 3 minutes . T prepares some cards with a number . The numbers are the numbers of the sentences in Ex1 (from 2 to 7 ) - After 3 minutes , T gives out the cards to some ss. The students have to write the sentence on the board. For each correct sentence, student will get one small present. Answers: 2. It was my mother who/that bought me a present on my birthday. 3. It was Huong and Sandra who/that sang together at the party. 4. It was Nam’s father who/that got angry with him. 5. It was the boys who/ that played football all day long. 6. It was the girl who/that received a letter from her friend yesterday. 7. It was his presence at the meeting that frightened the children. *Structure: It is/ was + Object + that/who(m) + S + V. +. * Khi muốn nhấn mạnh tân ngữ trong câu ta cũng dùng cấu trúc câu tách. Ta đem tân ngữ đặt giữa It is/was và that/ who(m) . Khi nhấn mạnh tân ngữ đại từ quan hệ That thường được sử dụng nhiều hơn. Ex: The woman gave him the book. It was the book that the woman gave him. Choose the best answer a or b: He bought some books yesterday. It was some books that he bought yesterday It is some books that he bought yestertday. Answer: a Exercise 2: (P. 153) _ T gets ss to do the Ex 2 in 3 minutes, then T gets ss to play the game: Lucky number There are 6 numbers with 4 sentences in Ex 2 and 2 lucky numbers. - SS will choose one number , if it is the lucky number, students won’t have to do anything but will get one small present ; If it is a sentence , ss will have to read aloud the sentence with cleft sentences of object focus. - T gives answers and checks Answer keys: Number 1: 1. The man is learning English –> It was English that the man is learning Number 2: 4. Hoa borrowed the book from Long.-> It was the book that Hoa borrowed from Long Number 3: 5. The little boy greeted his grandfather in a strange language .-> It was his grandfather that the lillte boy greeted in a strange language. Number 4: lucky number Number 5: 3. She sent her friend the postcard.-> It was the post card that she sent her friend. Number 6: lucky number * Structure: It is/ was + Adverbial focus + that + S + V + Khi muốn nhấn mạnh trạng ngữ ta cũng dùng câu tách để đặt trọng tâm vào trạng ngữ. Ta đưa trạng ngữ vào giữa it is/ was và that. Khi nhấn mạnh trạng ngữ ta chỉ nên dùng that Exercise 3: (P. 153) - T divides the class into 2 groups: The Red and the Blue. - T asks ss to prepare the Ex3 in 3 minutes and then asks ss in each group to take turn to go to the board and write the sentence from number 2 to number 5. - After that T shows the answer and gives marks for each group. The winner will be the group with higher mark and they will get a present. Answers: 2. It was for tea that she made some cakes. 3. It was for him that his father repaired the bicycle. 4. It was on his birthday that she presented him a book. 5. It was in Britain that he met his wife. 6. It was from the shop that she bought that present. Reorder the words to build cleft sentences: Jack / that / was / it / wrote / I / to who/ him / phoned/ it / was / yesterday/ Jane . Answers: It was Jack that I wrote to It was Jane who phoned him yesterday. Make cleft sentences for the picture below: - T shows a picture of Kieu story written by Nguyen Du and asks ss to make sentences using the cleft sentence structures Answer: It was Nguyen Du who/ that wrote Kieu story.
