Expected answers: P1: He is helping the blind children to read. P2: The students are helping the handicapped P3: These people are helping the AIDS patient. Lead-in: These people are doing the work without being paid for it. What do you call this kind of work? *** Volunteer Work In our lesson today, you will know about volunteer work in the USA. Work individually, Work in pairs & Whole class 6’ 6’ Before you read asks the whole class to look at the pictures on page 46, then asks: What is the old woman doing in the picture? What does this mean by “Little Moments Big Magic”? What does the picture tell you? Expected answers: The old woman is teaching the boy to read. The phrase means that your little contribution and help lead to significant results/ may greatly change a person’s life. The picture tells me that everybody, no matter what they are young or old, can do volunteer work. While you are reading, do the tasks in the textbook. Task 1: Filling the word “ volunteer” for each blanks elicits different parts of speech of the word “ volunteer” and writes these words on the board: Instructs Ss to read through the sentences provided in the task to identify the part of speech of the word. Ex: in sentence 1, we should use an adjective 2, ..an adverb 3, a noun 4, a verb Remind them about Subject Voluntary Voluntarily volunteers volunteered Task 2: Choose the best answers instructs St to do this task: + skim the five sentences to understand them. As Ss do this they underline the key words. For instance, In sentence 1: Ss can underline: Volunteer, help, sick or old, homes. + read the four choices given to choose the most suitable one. Ask them to work individually, then discuss their answer with their peers. Calls on someone to give their answer and asks other Ss to say whether they agree or disagree. Look for qs words like “ Why” which indicates Ss should read for specific thing like a reason. + Go back to the first question and locate information for the question by finding the key words in the passage and mark the place. + Read the part carefully to find the answers ** Calls on some to write their answers on the board. ** Gives correct answers: They read . problems.
