To get Ss to know the topic about ASEAN
-T shows Ss some pictures (handout 1) and asks Ss to answer the questions
1. What does it symbolize? / (what is this symbol?) 2. What does “ASEAN” stand for?
3. How many members are there in ASEAN?
- Elicit answers from students, encourages them if they know some more about ASEAN. Then T adds some more information about ASEAN, for example: Viet Nam became a member of ASEAN in 1995. 
- Suggested answer: 
+It is the symbol of ASEAN
+ “ASEAN” stands for “ Association of Southeast Asian Nations”
+ There are 11 members in ASEAN
B. KNOWLEDGE FORMATION AND PRACTICE ACTIVITIES (25 ms)
Activity 1. Listen and read. (8 ms)

- To provide some new words related to the topic
- To help Ss practice some skills (reading and listening)
-Ask Ss to look at the picture in the textbook and answer some more questions:
+ Who are the people in the picture?
+ What are they talking about?
- Tell Ss that they are going to listen to a conversation between a girl and her father.
- About the topic of their conversation
* Lead in: In our lesson today, you will know st about ASEAN: its aims, member states and activities.
* Vocabulary: - Elicit vocabulary using explanations and examples.
- Let pupils repeat the new words in chorus, then individually. Check Ss’ vocabulary using the technique Rub out and Remember.
- Tell Ss they are going to listen to a conversation between a girl and her father 
- Play the recording, listen and practice reading the conversation in pairs. 
Suggested answer:

-Ask Ss to work in pairs to answer the question: What is the conversation about? Choose the best answer

Activity 3. Match each word with its definition. Then practise reading the words aloud (5 ms)

.-Asks Ss to work by individual to match each word with its definition
 - Then asks Ss to work in pairs to practice reading the words aloud

-Asks them to explain for their matching

Activity 4. Read the conversation again and answer the questions. (7 ms)

-Asks Ss to work in pairs to read the text again and take turns to answer the questions
 - Encourages Ss to refer back to the conversation if necessary.

1. Because her classmates know a lot more about ASEAN and the ASEAN Charter , and are more confident than her.
2. As of 2010, it consists of 10 member states, but may be bigger because other countries because other countries have applied to join the bloc.

Summarise: “ASEAN” stands for “Association of Southeast Asian Nations”. It was formed in 1967. In 2010, it consisted of 10 members. ASEAN focuses on improving member states’ economies, and maintaining regional peace and stability”

Activity 1. Pronunciation: Falling and rising intonation

To focus on Falling and rising intonation
_ Plays the recording and let Ss listen. Play it again for Ss to repeat each sentence chorally.
 _ Asks Ss to focus on falling intonation in statements and rising intonation on yes/no questions
_ then Plays the recording. Ask Ss to repeat each sentence without any pauses. To show falling intonations, their voice should go down at the end of a statement. To show rising intonation, their voice should go up at the end of a yes/no question
- Suggested answer:
Intonation is the rise and fall of a speaker’s voice, and is important in communication.
 Speakers usually use falling intonation at the end of the statements. Falling intonation communicates certainty and finality.
 Speakers often use rising intonation at the end of yes / no questions. Rising intonation can signal uncertainty and doubt.
Task 1: Listen and repeat with the correct intonation. Then practise saying the sentences with a partner

- Ss may provide some more information about this folk dance.

- Invite representatives of different groups to show their dance to the class.

-Suggested answer:
Trong Com, which literally means Rice Drum, is a Vietnamese traditional dance. It is very popular in Viet Nam, especially in the north of the country. It symbolises people’s wishes for a peaceful, enjoyable and comfortable life. Trong Com has a boisterous, joyful and lively rhythm. It is also a charming dance, especially when accompanied by the folk song Trong Com. The beautiful lyrics and melody of the song greatly contribute to the popularity of the dance.

- Attitude: To revise the knowledge learnt and practise speaking English more often

- Divides the class into 2 groups.
- Allows Ss one week to collect information 
_ Have Ss find out the answers to the questions and take notes. Provide help if necessary.
Set A: Which ASEAN member state :
- is landlocked?
- has the largest / smallest population?
- uses the dollar as the currency unit?
- has the largest number of islands?
Set B: Which ASEAN member state :
- uses English as one of their official languages?
- is called “the land of golden pagoda”?
- is known as “the land of smiles”?
- has the largest / smallest area?
Work in two groups. Each group should choose a different set of questions. Do some research 
and find out the following: 
* Key : Set A: - Laos
-Indonesia(largest),Singapore (smallest)
- Brunei (Brunei dollar) and Singapore (Singapore dollar)
- Indonesia ( It has about 17, 508 islands)
Set B:
1. The Philippines and Singapore.
2. Myanmar 3. Thailand
4. Indonesia (largest: 1,904,569km 2); Singapore 
(smallest: 707,1 km2
Activity 2. Present your findings to the whole class (10 ms)
