 INTERNET SECURITY
Sitting in front of your own computer screen in the comfort of your own home, it is easy to feel safe and secure as you browse on—line and send e-mails to friends. Even professionals, though, need to take certain precautions as there are some quite unpleasant individuals out there.
Begin by making it a rule never to give out details of where you live to anyone unless you are absolutely sure you can trust that person. The same goes for any stranger who asks you for your phone number: if in doubt, just say “no”.
Never arrange to meet someone you’ve previously only communicated with on-line if you’re not completely sure about them. If you do agree to meet, tell friends or family where you’re going. Better still, make sure you meet in a public place and take a friend along with you.
Don’t send your photo to strangers and don’t assume any pictures they may send you are necessarily what they really look like. Remember that people using chatroorns and sending e-mails have been known to pretend to be much younger than they really are in order to befriend teenagers. And if anyone should send you a message that makes you feel at all uncomfortable, switch off your .computer and tell a friend or relative about it.
Finally, never let anyone have any of your passwords, no matter who they say they are or what they want them for.
1. People always feel insecure when they browse on-line.
2. You can give out details of where you live to anyone on—line because they are trustworthy.
3. You shouldn’t arrange to meet someone you’ve previously only communicated with on-line unless you are completely sure about them.
4. People using chatrooms have been known to pretend to be much younger than they really are.
5. If necessary, you can let a few people have some of your passwords.
