I. Stabilization ( 1 min)
II. Check- up( 3 mins): Write the sentences using the cues below:
The chart/ show/ energy consumption/ Highland/ 2000.
Petroleum/ make/ the largest amount/ this figure.
This/ follow/ the consumption/ coal.
III.Warm- up( 3 mins):
My favorite seafood is ___shrimp__.
The cake ___splits___ into two smaller parts.
Peach flowers are greeting ___spring___.
IV. Pronunciation( 8 mins)

2. Practice reading aloud these sentences (5 mins)
They were all shrieking with laughter
He shrugged (his shoulders), saying he didn’t know and didn’t care.

The stream splits into three smaller streams at this point.
The house has a narrow front, but it splays out at the back.
V. Grammar
A.Present Participial phrase( 4 mins): (V-ing)
Ex: 1. The girl is Lan. She’s playing with the dog.
à The girl who is playing with the dog is Lan
à The girl playing with the dog is Lan.
2. The man who spoke to John is my brother.
à The man speaking to John is my brother.
*Note: - We can use present participle to replace a relative clause in case the sentence has active meaning.
 - We reduce relative clause by omitting relative pronoun, then we use the main verb infinitive+ ING
* Formula 1: relative pronoun + V(active)à V-ing
* Task 1(6 mins) :Rewrite the following sentences, using a present participial phrase.
* Key answer:
The boy playing the piano is Ben.
Do you know the woman coming toward us?
The people waiting for the bus in the rain are getting wet.
The scientists researching the causes of cancer are making progress.
The fence surrounding our house is made of wood.
We have an apartment overlooking the park
B. Past Participial Phrase (3mins): (V-ed )
Ex: 1. That book is interesting. It was written by Shakespeare.
à The book which was written by Shakespeare is interesting.
à The book written by Shakespeare is interesting.
2. The Sport Games were the first Asian Games. They were held in India in 1951.
à The Sport Games which were held in India in 1951 were the first Asian Games.
à The Sport Games held in India in 1951 were the first Asian Games 
*Note: - We can use past participle to replace a relative clause in case the sentence has passive meaning.
 - We reduce relative clause by omitting relative pronoun and TO BE, then we use the verb in the form of V3 / V-ed.
* Formula 2: relative pronoun +BE + V3/ V-ed
 à V3/ V-ed
* Task 2: (6 mins) Rewrite the following sentences, by using a past participial phrase.
* Key answer:
1. The ideas presented in that book are interesting.
2. I come from a city located in the southern part of the country
3. They live in the house built in 1890
4. The photographs published in the newspaper were extraordinary.
5. The experiment conducted at the University of Chicago was successful.
6. They work in the hospital sponsored by the government.
C. Infinitive phrase (To-infinitive)(4 mins)
Ex: 1.Yuri Gagarin was the first man. He flew into space.
à Yuri Gagarin was the first man who flew into space.
à Yuri Gagarin was the first man to fly into space
2. The only one is a good student. He can understand this lesson.
à The only one who can understand this lesson is a good student.
à The only one to understand this lesson is a good student.
*Note: - We often use To-infinitive to replace a relative clause after an ordinal number (The first / the second/), after (the only/ the next/ the last), after the superlative adjectives
 - We reduce relative clauses by omitting relative pronouns and then we use “To infinitive (main verb)
 - If there is a passive clause after the first / second / only.we use passive infinitive (To + be + V3/ V-ed).
* Formula 3: relative pronoun + V
 à to infinitive/ to be V3/ V-ed
* Task 3: (6 mins) Rewrite the following sentences, using an infinitive phrase.
1. John was the last man to reach the top of the mountain.
2. The last person to leave the room must turn off the light
3. The first person to see is Mr Smith
4. This is the second person to kill is that way
5. The first person to catch the ball will be the winner
Production: ( home work)( 1 min)
+ practice reading the words and the sentences again at least twice at home.
 + prepare for the next lesson unit 12.
 + do the two exercises.

II. Reduce these sentences by using participles or to infinitives

4. The man who sat next to me on the train looked gentle.
5. The steam engine which was invented by James Watt opened a new period in human development history.
6. I knew then that I was not the first person who came as I saw smoke rising from the chimney of the house.
* Key answer:
1. Have you read the book written by Nguyen Du?
2. The road connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city is called Number 1. 
3. This is the second novel to be written by this famous writer. 
4. The man sitting next to me on the train looked gentle.
5. The steam engine invented by James Watt opened a new period in human development history.
6. I knew then that I was not the first person to come as I saw smoke rising from the chimney of the house.
