 - Explain the meaning in context

- Read the passage for comprehension

- Remember the main ideas of the passage.

- Talk about their own hobbies.

Teaching aids and materials: Textbook, blackboard, pictures, projector.

Unit 13: Hobbies 
Lesson: Reading
Class: 11/6
Time allotted: 45’
Aim: To help students learn and practice sub-skills of reading.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
	- Explain the meaning in context
- Read the passage for comprehension
- Remember the main ideas of the passage.
- Talk about their own hobbies.
Teaching aids and materials: Textbook, blackboard, pictures, projector.

I. Warm-up
(5’)
Game: Bingo!
Objective: to involve Ss in the lesson and lead in the topic of the reading.
- T asks Ss to close their book.
- Ask Ss to take a piece of paper.
- T gives the instructions to play game:
 + Ask Ss to list activities people often do in their spare time.
 + Ss are asked to list as many as they can within 2 minutes.
 + T shows in turn each kind of hobby and Ss will put a tick (√) next to that word.
 + The first student to tick all 5 words will shout “Bingo!” and win the game.
- T allows Ss to play game.
Expected answer:
- T declares the winner and gives gift.
Lead in:
 + T asks Ss the questions:
“What is the common topic of these activities?”
Ss: HOBBIES
 + T introduces: “Today we will read a passage about some hobbies of the writer.”

II. Pre- Reading

1. Pre-teach Vocabulary:
Objective: to help Ss learn some basic words before doing tasks.
* Accomplished (a): Lành nghề, tài ba
 + Eliciting technique: synonym
 + Eliciting question:
What is another word for “talented”?
* Modest (a): Khiêm tốn
 + Eliciting technique: picture
 + Eliciting question:
Is this tank big or small?
What is another word for “small”?
* Keep S.O occupied: Làm ai bận rộn

* Avid (a): Say mê, khao khát

1. Activity 1: Matching
Objective: to check the new words and help Ss read the passages and practice explaining meaning in context.

2. Activity 2: True/ False statements
Objective: to help Ss practice reading and decide on T/F statements.

3. Activity 3: Comprehension questions
Objective: to help Ss practice reading comprehension skill.
- T shows the questions on the screen:
1. What is the writer’s first hobby?
2. Why does the writer admire his uncle?
3. How did he collect his fish?
4. Where does he collect the stamps?
5. What does the writer do with the less common stamps and with the common ones?
- T asks Ss to work in pairs.
- T asks Ss to read the whole passage and answer the questions.
- Ask Ss to compare the answers with their partners.
- T goes around the class and gives help.
- T invites some Ss from each pair to give their answers.
- T asks Ss to show the evidences that help them decide the answers and rewrite the answers on the blackboard.
- T corrects Ss’ answers.
Expected answer:
1. His first hobby is playing guitar.
2. Because he is an accomplished guitarist and he is good at accompanying people singing with his guitar.
3. He bought some from the shop and collected some others from the rice field near his house.
4. He collects them from discarded envelopes his relatives and friends give him.
5. He keeps the less common stamps inside a small album and he usually gives the common ones to others or throws them away if no one wants them.
4. Activity 4: Summarizing
Objective: to help Ss remember the main ideas of the reading passage.
- T asks Ss to work in groups of 4.
- In each group, Ss are asked to summarize the passage basing on the information from task 2 and task 3.
- T reminds Ss to summarize each of the writer’s hobbies (playing guitar, keeping fish, and collecting stamps).
- T walks around to help Ss.
- T calls some Ss from each group to present their paragraph.
- T listens and gives feedback.

IV. Post-Reading

Discussion:
Objective: to help Ss use new vocabularies and information from the reading passage to talk about their hobbies.
- T asks Ss to work in groups of 4.
- Ss are asked to discuss about their own hobby.
- T gives Ss some hints:
- T asks Ss to discuss and share the ideas in their groups.
- After 4 minutes, T calls some Ss from each group to present in front of the class.
- T listens and gives comments.
Homework (1’)
- T asks Ss to learn the new words.
- Ask Ss to write a paragraph (100 words) about their own hobbies.
- T reminds Ss to prepare the next lesson (Speaking, p.148)
