Competitions Lesson 1: Reading * Aims and Requirement - Sts understand the passage and can do all the tasts well: Word meaning in context, passage comprehension, scanning for specific information. * Lexical items: - New words/phrases : representative, annual, spirit - Reported speech * Assumptions - Sts know some contests through mass media. * Anticipated problem - Some sts have difficulties in new words. * Materials - Book, ruler, chalk, bb, reference book, pictures. * Procedure Time 7' 7 10' 18' 3’ Procedure I. Warm up - Sts look at the pictures of some competions: 1. London Marathon 2. Sao Mai Television Singing contest 3. Road to mount Olympia 4. Olympic Games - T leads to the new lesson. II. New lesson - Sts listen to the T's reading and underline new word in the reading text. - T explains some new words and asks sts do the task 1 * Task 1 - Sts find out all the words in the passage and then try to guess their meaning. - T goes around the class to check and help some sts. - Some sts do orally. - T comments and corrects - 1. d; 2. f; 3. e; 4. c; 5. b; 6. a * Task 2 - Sts scan the passage to find out the answer - Some ss present on the board - Some pairs do orally - T comments and corrects 1The representatives of three classes of our school took part in the annual final English last Saturday 2. Its aim to stimulate the spirit of learning english among students 3. The students' Parents society 4. They had to complete 5 activities in all. On completion of each activity, they had to answer the question on the worksheet within 2 minutes. 5. They had to observe and score the students' performance.A maximum score for each activity was 15. At the end of the competition they would annouce the total score of each group. The group that got the highest score would be the winner. 6. the winner would be awarded a set of CDs for studying English and an " Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary". * Task 3 - Sts read the passage again and then complete the sentences - T goes around the class to check and help some sts. - Some sts do orally. - T comments and corrects: 1...He could not remember the last sentences 2...Group B became the winner of the completion. 3...Group C lost the game because they just got 60 points. 4.. ."For me, the most iumportant thing was..." Competition Lesson 2: speaking * Aims and Requirement - Sts practise speaking abt some kind of competitionsand their feelings about them. * Lexical items - New words/phrases : General knowledge, poetry athletic... - Intonation and stress in speaking. * Assumptions - Sts have background information about some kind of contests. * Anticipated problem - Some sts cannot speak well * Materials - Book, ruler, chalk, bb, reference book. Time 7' 7 10' 18' 3 Procedure * Warm up: - Ss discuss some kinds of competitiions in Vietnam and in the world. - T leads to the new lesson. * Task 1 - Sts read all the sentences carefully and then tick their hobby on each kind of competition - T explains some phrases more clearly - T goes around the class to check and help some sts. - Some sts do orally. - T comments and corrects their pronunciation carefully. * Task 2 - Sts work in pairs: Ask their partner about each type of competitions in Task 1 - T do the sample with a ss - Ss do the same, using useful language in the textbook. - T guides sts to make sentences and provides some new words - Some sts do orally - T listens and corrects for them: A: What do you think of the English Conpetition? B; Oh I think it is very helpful and useful. It is a chance for us to spactise speaking English better. What about you? ... * Task 3 - Sts work in groups of 3: talk about their contest they have joined or seen, using the suggestions in the textbook. - T guides sts to make sentences and provides some new words - T checks some sts’ notes and corrects. - Some sts do orally - T listens and corrects for them. Last week, I watched the Quiz: Road to mount Olympia on TV. It is a general knowledge quiz for high school students. It was organised by VTV 3. There were 4 people participating in it. They had to join in 4 parts of the contest and who had more correct answers won. All 4 students were very excellent, howerver, inthe end, Nguyen Lan Phuong, from Nguyen Hue high school won the game. She got highest mark by 180 poins.I liked this quiz very much because it helds me to widen my knowledge and helps me to be keen on my studying. IV. Before listening - Sts answer the qs in pairs. - T goes around to check sts' speaking - Some sts do orally. - T comments and corrects: 1. It's probadly the first long distanse race, marathon, in the world, and it started in the U.S in 1897. 2. At first this running was only reserved for men, until 1967, women could participate in it. Now everyone in the world can join it. - T leads to the listening. * Listen and repeat - Sts read chorally after T - T explains some new words. 2.
