UNIT 4 VOLUNTEER WORK Speaking Period 19 Preparing date: 8/10/2007 Teaching date: B2..B4. I. Objectives Aim(s): - Talk about different kinds of activities related to volunteer work. Teacher’s activities Students’s activities 1.Warm-up (8 minutes) * Describing the pictures. - Divides the class into small groups and gives each group a set of pictures. - Asks Ss to look at the pictures and guide Ss to describe them. -Requires Ss to describe the activity in each picture in one sentence only. - Walks around the class to help when necessary. - Suggested answers: - Asks the group to compare answers with others. - Calls some groups to practice in front of the class. - Suggested answers: * Introduce the new lesson. Warm-up - Students’ answers may vary. 1.The student is teaching the poor children. 2.The Ss are taking part in directing the traffic. 3.The medical Ss are examining the old people. 4.The Ss are taking care of the disadvantaged children. 5.TheSs are taking part in a Blood Donation activity. 6.The Ss are collecting the rubbish. 7.The Ss are helping the soldiers to build the road. 8.The Ss are helping the examinees during the University entrance exam period. - Listen. Pre-Speaking. (7 minutes) Task 1 - Guides Ss to use some stragies and do the task. Asks Ss to read carefully sentences in task1 to understand them. - Asks Ss to work in pairs to decide which of the activities are volunteer work. - Walks around the class to help when necessary. - Asks Ss to compare answers with friends. - Calls Ss to practice answers in front of the class. - Explains why a certain activity is not volunteer work. - Remark and corrected answers: Pre-Speaking. Task 1 - Work in pairs. - Compare answers with friends - Answers: 1.The activities which are volunteer work: taking part in an excursion and participating in an English speaking club. + Reason: You take part in these activities for yourself, not to help other people. 2.Some other volunteer activities: Taking part in envronmental conservation activities, donating blood, directing traffic, guiding foreign sports teams around when they go to Vietnam to compete While-Speaking (15 minutes) Task 2 * Introduce: You are going to make conversations based on the given suggestions. - Guides Ss to use some stragies and make conversations. - Give some new words and meaning on the board. - Asks Ss to read the examle conversation and work in pairs. - Asks Ss to read carefully sentences in box and make conversations. - Asks Ss to discuss and work in pairs. - Suggested answers. - Walks around the class to help when necessary. - Asks Ss to compare the conversations with friends - Calls some couples to practice in front of the class - Check and Corrected answers: While-Speaking Task 2 - Listen and prepare conversations. - Work in pairs - Compare conversations with other pairs. - Make conversations. 1. A: What exactly are you doing? B:We are taking them to places of interest. A:Do you enjoy your work? B:Yes, I like helping people. Post- Speaking: (12 minutes) Task 3 * Introduce: Now you work in groups to talk about a kind of volunteer work your partner in the previous task do to help other people. - Guides Ss to use some stragies. - Asks Ss to read through the examle in the book. - Guides Ss to work in groups and discuss the questions. 1.What kind of volunteer work do you usually take part in? 2.What do you usually do in that kind of volunteer work? 3.What do you think about that kind of volunteer work? - Asks Ss to answer the questions. - Suggested answers. - Walk around the class to help when necessary. - Asks Ss to compare answers with friends. - Calls Ss to answer the questions in front of the class. - Asks Ss to talk about a kind of volunteer work and you usually do to help people. Homework. (3 minutes) - Asks Ss to do the tasks again . - Asks Ss to prepare the new lesson. Post- Speaking Task 3 - Work in group. - Compare the answers with friends. - Answer the questions. 1.We usually take part in helping in mountainous areas 2.We teach the children to read and write.
