 Suppermarket are a new ideal. One hundred year ago, people went food shopping at different stores.. One store sold bread, another meat, another cookies, and another fruit and vegetables. Customers didn’t use shopping carts. They told clerk what they wanted and the clerk gave it to them. These were “grocery stores”
 A big change in grocery stores happened in 1916. Clarence Saunders opened Piggly Wiggly, a “self-service” store. Customers chose the products they wanted and paid for them when they left the stores. By 1929,there were 3000 Piddly Wigglys in the United States. 
 People liked the unsual name Piggly Wggly. They found it interesting. New stores in 1920s and 1930s had funny names too: Hindky Dinky, Jitney Jungle, Alpha Beta, and Giant Tiger.
