Laser Applications
Laser beams have a variety of uses in industry, scientific research, communication, medicine, and military programs. Light lasers focused on a small spot can heat, melt, or vaporize material. Scientists monitor the earth's movements and study molecular structures with lasers. Laser light is ideal for space communications because it travels far through outer space with little reduction in signal strength. On earth, optical fibers transmit laser light for communication in telephone and computer systems. Surgeons use lasers because the beams can cut and sear tissue in a fraction of a second without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. Matter lasers are still experimental but may be used in the future to improve the accuracy of atomic clocks, make better computer chips, and measure interactions at the atomic and subatomic level that were difficult (if not impossible) to study before.
