 - Use the information they have read to discuss the topic.

3. Education:

- Educate Sts to understand well our culture and festival in their country.

Period 1: Reading.
I. Objective: 
1. Knowledge
	Students will understand more about one of traditional festivals in Vietnam – Lunar New Year – Tet. Sts can improve their vocabulary about the topic through speaking and writing activities.

II. Procedure.
1. Organization (1’).
- Greeting.
- Check attendance.
2. Check-up.
- No checking.
3. New lesson.
Teacher’s Activities
Time
Students’ Activities.
Warm-up.
T plays or sings the song “Happy New Year” of the band ABBA. Then give some questions:
What is the title of the song?
When do people often sing it?
What is it about?
Before you read.
T asks Sts to look at the picture in the notebook and answer three questions.
If Sts have difficulties, T can suggest by making some questions: 
Are they family?
Where are they?
What are they doing?
Are they happy?
What are on the table?
What trees is on the right of the picture / on the left of the picture? 
Have Ss work in pairs to tell which of the activities in the book they enjoy doing the most at Tet. Sts may also list other activities they like doing at Tet. T reminds Ss to give reason for their answers. 
Call on some Sts to present their answers and other Sts comment.
T pre-teach some words and phrases:

While you read.
Task 1.
T sets the scene: You are going to read a passage about Tet holiday in Vietnam. While you are reading, do the tasks in the textbook.
T writes these words on the board: Grand, banner, sugared apples, agrarian, pray, excitement.
Instruct Sts to read the passage quickly and stop at the lines that contain these words to guess their meaning.
T checks that Sts understand the words correctly. T can check Sts’ understanding by asking them to provide the Vietnamese equivalent tot the words.
Task 2.
Instruction: you are going to read the passage and decide whether the statements are true of false.
T and Sts read through the statements.
Ask Sts to underline the key words.
Ask Ss to work individually to do the task and discuss their answers with their peers.
Call on some Ss to give their answers and ask them to explain their choices.
Task 3
Instruction: You are required to answer the seven questions in the book.
- T checks if Ss can answer the comprehension questions in Task 3 without having to read the passage again. If Ss can not, T gets them to read the questions carefully and give them some tips to do the task.
- Ask Ss to work individually to do the task, and then discuss their answers with their peers.
- Call on some Ss to write their answers on the board and ask them to explain their choices. 
After you read.
Ask Ss to work in groups to tell each other about their last Tet holiday. Ask Ss what verb tense they should use.
Go around helping Ss when necessary.
When Ss have finished, t call on some Ss to report their ideas to the class.
T elicits corrective feedback from other Ss and gives her own comments.

Sts listen to the song and then answer some questions on teacher
Suggested answer:
1. Happy New Year
2. To welcome the New Year.
3. Feeling about the old year and the new year.
Look at the picture and answer them with a partner.
1. It is Spring and it should be Tet holiday because we can see the apricot blossom and kumquat tree full of ripe fruit.
2. The people in the picture may be a family. The grandmother is giving her niece and nephew some lucky money. The girl, the boy and their parents may be wishing their parents good health and happiness.
3. In the picture we can also see a five-fruit tray on the ancestral altar and a dish of fruits, a tray of candied fruits and a banh chung on the table.
Talk about the activities they like doing at Tet.
Listen to T’s explanation and write down in the book.

Read the text. Guess the meaning of the words based in the contexts in the sentences. For example, to guess the meaning of grand (line 1, first paragraph) St may base their guessing on the other words such as main holiday, important. To guess the meaning of pray (line 6, last paragraph) they pay attention to pagoda, happy year.

Sts read through the statement to get an idea of it.

Read the questions carefully; underline the key words; go back to the passage and locate information; answer the questions with their own words.

Talk about their last Tet with their friends. They should use the past simple tense to talk about their last holiday.

Task 1.
T sets the scene: You are going to read a conversation between Mai and Anna who are talking about Tet holiday in Vietnam.
T asks the whole class to read the dialogue silently and asks them what points are mentioned in the dialogue.
Check with the whole class and make clear that; in the dialogue the two friends talk about Tet holiday, its time and activities.
Go around observing.
When Ss have finished, T calls on some pairs to act out the dialogue and give comments.
T prepares some structures for the next step.
Task 2.
Instruction: You are going to match the holiday with its description and activities.
Before Ss do the task, T asks them to look at three pictures on page 93 and work out the name of each holiday. Ss may be asked to give the Vietnamese equivalents to each holiday.

I. Objective: 
1. Knowledge
	Students will write a description of a popular celebration.
2. Skill:
	- Make a detailed outline for their writing
	- Practice writing from the outline.
3. Education:
- Educate Sts to understand well culture and festival in their country and in the world.
II. Teaching aids:
1. Teacher: Textbook, Lesson plan, handouts.
2. Students: textbook, notebook, pens.
III. Procedure.
1. Check-up(5’).
Question: Learn by heart all new words of previous lesson. Give examples.

T divides each group selecting one festival to think out ideas and vocabulary related.
T collects the answer from Ss and writes on the board.
T carries on asking Ss to make a detailed outline. (If the class has a lot of ill-students, T can have them work in groups.)
Go around and provide help when necessary.
Ask Ss work with each other to comment on each other’s outline.
Task 2.
T gets Ss to describe the festival they have chosen in 15 minutes.
Go around observing and offering help with vocabulary or structures.
T asks Ss to exchange their writing with another for peer correction.
T goes around and collects some mistakes, errors
Choose one or two description and read them / it to the class.
Then T elicits corrective feedback from the class and gives final comments afterwards. T should draw Ss’ attention to the organization of ideas and language use.

Handout
1. It is a national holiday. Schools and offices close. There are parades along the streets, meetings, celebrations to remember those who died for the country’s independence.
2. Children gather at night, going round with their colorful lanterns, watching lion or dragon dance, sharing moon-cakes in the full moon lights.
3. Husbands, sons, lovers buy flowers or gifts for their mothers, wives or lovers. They also offer to do the cooking for the whole family on this day.
4. Students visit their teachers with flowers, cards or small gifts to show their gratitude.
Ss brain storming and give their views

Sample writing:
The Mid-Autumn Festival comes on the fifteen day of the eight lunar month. It is the time when the moon looks the most beautiful so it is celebrated to admire the full moon (of the eight lunar months). On this day parents take their children out, carrying beautiful glowing lanterns. There are also performances at the city center where large crowds gather to watch children sing and dance. Adults sit outdoors, drinking tea and having moon-cakes. People can also enjoy dragon or lion dance performed by group of boys who come to each family to dance and receive some money as rewards.
I like this activities best because it is so funny and full of joys

T models the three clusters / fl /, / fr /, and / r / for a few times and explains how to produce them
E.g: when producing / fl /, Sts should pronounce / f / first and then quickly switch to / l / and so on.
T plays the tape once or more.
Play the tape again. This time T asks Sts to repeat.
T asks Sts to read the words in each column out aloud in chorus for a few times. Then call on some Sts to read the words aloud. T listens and corrects if Sts pronounce the target words incorrectly. If many Sts don’t pronounce the words correctly, t may want to get them to repeat after the tape again in chorus and then individually.
Practice these sentences.
T plays the tape once or more.
T walks around and listens, take note of typical error.
T calls on some Sts to read the sentences again and provides corrective feedback.
T can give some additional sentences for Sts further practice

T sets the scene: Rewrite the sentences, using the pronounce ones.
Have Ss do exercise 2 in pairs.

Exercise 3.
Instruction: you are required to complete the sentences by filling each blank with the one word from the box.
T asks Ss how to do this exercise. T may give them some tips to do the exercise.
