Unit 14: RECREATION Lesson A: Reading 1.Objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Develop the reading skill Scan reading for specific information about recreation Use the information they have to discuss the related topics Read and guess meaning of words in context Read and find the main idea for the paragraph Read and answer the questions about the content of the lesson 2. teaching aids: Text book, pictures 3.Teaching Procedures: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities 1.Warm up(5’) - Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students and then distribute the handout for Sts to do in their groups. - In groups Sts look at the pictures of leisure activities and work out which activity is described in each picture( these pictures describe the activities given on page 155). Which group finishes first and has the biggest number of correct answers will be winner. - Call on the winner group to go to the board to write their answers and ask other groups to give comments. - Give the correct answers Answers Reading books Playing volleyball Shopping Singing Listening to music Fishing Playing the guitar Before you read - Ask Sts to look at the activities written on the board and guess which of these leisure activities British people often do in their free time. - Elicit the answer from the whole class and put a tick next to the activities Sts think British people often do in their free time. - Introduce the topics of the lesson: Recreation 2.Pre- reading (7’) - Use many methods to help students get the meaning of the new words in the message Dull(adj): slow to understand or learn Pastime(n): hobby Snooker(n): give the meaning directly Pool(n): give the meaning directly Darts(n): give the meaning directly Bricklaying(n): give the meaning directly Engrave(v): give the meaning directly - Help Sts to pronounce them correctly 3.While you read (27’) a. TASK 1 ê Instruction: The words/phrases in italics in the following sentences all appear in the passage. Working out their meaning and circle the correct answer. - Ask Sts to work individually - Ask Sts to read the passage silently and instruct Sts how to do the task. - Ask Sts to read the sentences and go back to the passage to locate and read around the italicized word/phrase to guess its meanings. - Call Sts to read the three choices given in the book and work out which one closest in meaning to the word or phrase - Ask Sts to work in pairs to exchange their answers - Check the answers with the whole class Answer 1. A b/ TASK 2 Introduction: You are require to read the text again and answer the four questions in the task - Skim the four questions to understand them - Work in pairs - Ask Sts to underline the key words to decide what information they need to find in the text -Look for the question word like “why” which indicates Sts should read for specific thing like a reason. - Call some Sts to read aloud their answers and ask them to explain their choices. - Check the answers - Feedback for Sts: Because without them people will become dull Football and rugby in winter, and cricket and athletics in summer Walking and swimming Because this is a new kind of entertainment which gives them pleasure 4/ After you read - Ask Sts to work in groups of three people to discuss the question: which of the British leisure activities mentioned in the passage are also popular in Vietnam?
