I. Warm up : Pictures & Questions:
Look at the pictures and answer the questions:
1. What place is it?
 ® It’s a shrine
2. What season is it?
 ® It’s spring
3. What are the children doing?
 ® They are splashing over each other.
II. Pronunciation: 
1. Activity 1: Arrange the following words into 3 groups / òr/, /spl/ or /spr/
 spring splash spray shred
 split shrimp spleen spread shrill 
2. Activity 2: Listen and repeat:
 / òr/ /spl/ /spr/
 shred splash spring
 shrill split spray
 shrimp spleen spread
 shrine splutter sprightly	 
3. Activity 3: Practise these sentences:
1. They were all shrieking with laughter.
2. He shrugged (his shoulders), saying he didn’t know and didn’t care.
3. My dad hates shrimp paste.
4. What a splendid spring day!
5. The stream splits into three smaller streams at this point.
6. The house has a narrow front, but it splays out at the back.
III. GRAMMAR: 
1. Presentation:
A. The relative clauses replaced by participle:
* Active participle: (V-ing)
Ex: The girl who lives next door is very kind.
 Relative clause
 ® The girl living next door is very kind.
 Participle phrase
* Passive Participle:
Ex: The books which were written by To Hoai are interesting.
---> The books written by To Hoai are interesting.
B. The relative clauses replaced by To-infinitive:
Ex: The language that we should master is English.
 Relative clause
® The language to master is English.
 Infinitive 
2. Practice:
Exercise 1: Rewrite the following sentences, using a present participial phrase.
Answer key: 
The boy playing the piano is Bend.
Do you know the woman coming toward us?
The people waiting for the bus in the rain are getting wet.
The scientists researching the causes of cancer are making progress.
The fence surrounding our house is made of wood.
We have an apartment overlooking the park.
Exercise 2: Rewrite the following sentences, using a past participial phrase.
Answer key: 
The ideas presented in that book are interesting.
I come from a city located in the southern part of the country.
They live in a house built in 1890.
The photographs published in the newspaper were extraordinary.
The experiment conducted at the University of Chicago was successful.
They work in a hospital sponsored by the government.
Exercise 3: Rewrite the following sentences, using an infinitive phrase
Answer key: 
John was the last man to reach the top off the mountain.
The last person to leave the room must turn off the light.
The first person to see is Mr. Smith.
This is the second person to be killed in that way.
The first person to catch the ball will be the winner.
IV. Homework : 
- Finish the exercise at home.
Reduce the following relative clauses into phrases:
The girls who are playing in the school yard are in our class.
There are many exercises that I have to finish before school.
The person who lives next to my door has bought a new house.
The mistakes which you have to correct are very important.
