UNIT 11: NATIONAL PARKS
LESSON 5: LANGUAGE FOCUS
 Time allowance: 45 minutes
I. Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: 
Distinguish and pronoun the sounds /t/ and /d/ clearly.
Use Conditional sentence type 3 in communication appropriately

Warm up: 
- Show some pictures about some kinds of animal which their names contain the sound /d/, /t/.
- Ask the Sts to read out their names.

- Ask Sts guess What sounds are you going to learn today?
Pronunciation: 
* Pronouncing the two sounds separately:
- Model the two sounds twice or three times
+ /t/: first, put the front of your tongue behind your top teeth. Put air forward in your mouth. Then, move your tongue away. It is the voiceless sound.
+/d/: first practice /t/. Then, use your voice to make /d/.It is the voiced sound.
- Pronounce the sounds and ask students to repeat.
- Ask students to practice pronouncing the sounds in chorus and individually.
- Give feedback
* Pronouncing words containing the sounds: /t/

- Read the words in each column all at once
- Read the words once again, each time with a word in each column to help Sts distinguish the differences between the sounds in the words.
- Read the words and ask students to repeat them
- Ask the students to practice pronouncing the words in pairs.
- Go around to provide help
- Ask the students to pronounce the words
- Give correction if necessary

- Call some students to read the sentences aloud

Grammar: 
 Conditional Sentence Type 3
a. Presentation:
- Ask students to go to the board and write down the form of conditional sentence type 3 (as they have learnt this in the speaking lesson).
- Call some students to tell the class about the meaning and use of Conditional sentence type 3. If the Sts forget, T can do a quick revision. 
Form: IF + S + Past perfect (had + PP), S + would have + PP).
à Expresses an action which didn’t happen in the past.
- Call some Sts to give some examples (If Sts can not give examples, T may suggest them.
1. We couldn’t go to the concert because we didn’t have enough money.
2. I lost my job because I was late for work).
b. Practice:
Exercise 1:
- Ask students to do exercise 1.
- Ask students to do the task individually firs. Then ask students to compare their answers with a partner.
- Go around to provide help if necessary
- Call 2 students to go to the board to write their answers. (Stand up and read their answers).
- Correct mistakes.
- Give correct answers.

1. If the driver in front hadn’t stopped so suddenly, the accidents wouldn’t have happened.
2. If I had known that Lam had to get up early, I would have woken him up.
3. If Hoa hadn’t lent me the money, I would not have been able to buy the car.
4. If Mary hadn’t been wearing a seat belt, she would have been injured.
5. If you had had breakfast, you wouldn’t be hungry now.
6. If I had had some money on me, I would have got a taxi.
Exercise 3
- Ask the students to do exercise 3 in pairs.
- Ask the students to compare their answers with another pair.
- Call on some students to read out their answers.
- Correct pronunciation, mistakes.
- Give suggested answers.
1. If I had been working at the restaurant last night, I would have waited on your table.
2. If they had been paying attention, they would have seen the sign marking their exit from the highway.
3. Carol would have answered the phone if she hadn’t been studying.
4. If the sun hadn’t been shining, we wouldn’t have gone to the beach yesterday.
5. If the music hadn’t been playing loudly at the restaurant, I would have heard everything Mr. Lee said during dinner.
C. Production: Chain game
- T writes a conditional type 3 on in a piece of paper. 
- Introduce the game: T gives the sentence to a student and the student has to read the sentence out loud and write another third conditional beginning with the independent clause of T’s sentence. For example, If I had reviewed the lesson before going to class, I wouldn’t have got bad mark yesterday. The student continues making the other sentence. For example, If I had reviewed the lesson before going to class, The teacher would not have been angry yesterday. Then this student will give the paper to another student. The game continues until a student cannot make the sentence or produces a wrong sentence, and then this student has to make another new one. The game continues like that.
Homework: 
- Ask students to do exercise in workbook at home.
- Ask students to write 5 sentences using conditional sentence type 3.
- Ask students to prepare Unit 12 at home.
- Name the animals in the pictures.
