Lesson plan Unit 11: Asian Games – Reading Teaching time: period 2, Saturday morning, 05/03/2011 Class: 45 students S’s level & characteristics: pre-intermediate, most Ss are passive. I/ Aims: This lesson aims to help Ss to: Understand and use new vocabulary items related to the topic. Improve reading skills as scanning for specific information and guessing meaning in context. II/ Objectives: By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to: Develop such reading skills as scanning for specific information, and guessing meaning in context. Use the information they have read to discuss about their hobbies. IV/ Approach & teaching aids: Communicative approach Powerpoint presentation, BB, textbook, eraser, chalk, handout, worksheet, wall-charts, computer, projector, pens. V/ Anticipated problems: Ss may not have sufficient vocabulary to read and talk about the topic so teacher should be ready to help them. VI/ Teaching procedure: Classroom procedure (1’) Greeting Checking attendance Review of the previous lesion (4’) New lesson: (40’) T’s activities Ss’ activities Content Warm-up:(8’) Divide class into 2 groups. Introduce the rules of the games: “Each group will have one representative. The representative will look at some pictures and use action to describe these pictures for groups to guess. If your group guess wrong, the other group have chance to answer. Which group has more correct answers will bw the winners. Each group has 3 minutes to guess 5 pictures.” Let Ss play the game. Lead into the lesson: “These are some common activity people like to do for pleasure. They are called hobbies. Today, our lesson is about hobbies.” Work in pair. See Appendix Pic1: read a book Pic2: sing a song Pic3: swim Pic4: chat on the phone Pic5: go fishing Pic6: play a game Pic7: play football Pic8: dance Pic9: play an musical instrument Pic10: play chess Pre-reading: (10’) Distribute handouts to Ss. Read loudly and clearly some new words in the passage, then explain them. Ask Ss to repeat new words. Let Ss listen to the tape about the reading passage so that they can pronounce correctly. Ask Ss read the passage silently and answer the question. Show the Qs on slide What does the reading text talk about? The writer is an accomplished guitarist. Where he caught his fish. The kinds of stamps that he has collected. The writer’s hobbies. Call on some Ss to read aloud the answer. Give feedback and show the answer. Listen and take note Repeat the new words in chorus and individuals. Listen to the tape. Read the text silently and answer the question. Each group chooses a number and answer the question behind the number. Which group has more correct answers will be the winner. Using the reading text as the cues to answer the questions.” Let Ss play game. Give feedback and show the answer. Work in groups. Take notes. See Appendix Post-reading: (5’) Task 2: Talk about your friend’s hobbies. Give direction: “Ask your friend about his/her hobby, using the following questions as cues: What is your hobby? When do you do it? Where do you do it?” Give a model talk. Ask Ss to repeat aloud the model. Ask Ss to work in pairs. Go around to control and give help if any need. Call on some Ss to talk about their partners’ hobbies in front of class. Give feedback. Repeat the model. Work in pair. Model talk: A: What is your hobby? B: My hobby is reading. A: When do you do it? B: I often/ usually read when I have free time. A: Where do you read? B: I often read in my room. Sometimes, I go to the library. A: B’s hobby is reading. He often reads when he has free time. He often reads in his room. Sometimes, he goes to the library to read. Homework: (2’) Write a paragraph about your hobbies according to questions in task 2. What is the writer’s second hobby? (Keeping fish) Where does he keep his fish? (In a modest little glass fish tank.) How does he collect his fish? (He bought from the shop or caught from the rice house near his house.) What kind of stamp collector is the writer? (He is not an avid stamp collector.) Where does he collect his stamps? (From discarded envelops that his relatives and friends give him.) Which does he get more of, local stamps or foreign stamps? (Local stamps.) What does he do with less common stamps, and with common ones? (He keeps less common stamps inside a small album, and give away or throw away common ones.) TASK 2: TALK ABOUT YOUR FRIEND’S HOBBY Questions: What is your hobby? When do you do it? Where do you do it? Model talk: A: What is your hobby? B: My hobby is reading. A: When do you do it?
