Warm-up: - Introduce what the Ss are going to watch: some hobbies of Lan-a student. - Play a short video clip about her activities, then ask Ss to take notes quickly what they’ve seen. - Ask them to discuss in group of 10 or 12. - Then call on the representatives of all groups to write on the board. - The winner group will be the one with more correct answers in shortest time. B. New lesson: 1. Before you read: a. Pictures: - Ask ss to work in pairs, then ask and answer about the pictures given. - Call on some pairs to give their questions and answers, encourage them to make all kinds of questions, both interrogative and wh-ones. b. Discussion: - Ask ss to work in pairs again, ask and answer about their own hobbies. - Call on 2 or 3 pairs ask and answer, may ask them to explain why they like this more than that. 2. While you read: a. Task 1: - Ask ss to read through the passage and underline new words. - Ask them to do task 1 individually. - Then request them to exchange with their partners. - Ask some Ss to give their opinions. - Check their answers: 1. accomplished: skilled: tài ba, tài hoa. 2. accompanying: going with a singer, using a musical instrument: đệm đàn. 3. Teach new words: - Then divide Ss into 4 groups, ask each group to work in one paragraph to find out new words, then look up their meanings. - Call on the representatives to give their words on the board. - Instruct Ss to read aloud all the new words. - Call on two or three others to read again, may check their mistakes in pronunciation. b. Task 2: - Ask Ss to play game “Lucky numbers,,: + Divide Ss into 3 big groups. + Each group will be given 3 chances to choose questions (it means each group chooses 3Qs). + After choosing their questions, they have (one minute, 10 seconds) to find out the answers, then 2 members of that group will ask and answer. + If they ask and answer well, their group will be given 10 pts, if they answer wrongly, they will get 0 pt and the chance will be given to the next team. + Questions 3,7 and 9 will be marked “Lucky numbers... If Ss choose these and they answer perfectly, their marks will be doubled. - After that, ask Ss to close their books and write down all the answers in their notebooks. - Suggested key: 1. His first hobby is playing guitar. 2. No, he isn’t. 3. Because he’s an accomplished guitarist and he is good at accompanying people singing by his guitar. 4. His second hobby is keeping fish. 5. He bought some from the shop and collected some from the rice field near his house. 6. He is an avid stamp collector 7. He collects them from discarded envelopes his relatives and friends give him. 8. Local stamps. 9. He keeps the less common ones inside a small album. The common ones he usually gives away to others or if noone wants them he simply throws them away. 3. After you read: - Ask Ss to work in groups of a table, each one will have to talk about their hobby in 5 sentences, using as many useful structures as they can. The others ask about his/her hobby. - Call at random some Ss to talk about his/her hobby. Encourage them to talk confidently, and naturally, try to use as many useful structures as they can. - Give comments and marks to the best. Student’s activities - Listen to what the T says - Note down while watching - Work in groups of 10 or 12 - The representatives of all groups write on the board. Grammar and Vocabulary Cleft Sentences *Subject focus: - Give a situation - Ask pls to make a conversation => Explain “subject focus” ( to make clear the doer of an action) * Ask pls to do exercise 1 - Correct pls’ mistakes ( Give marks) * Notice: Cleft sentences keep the same tense with the original sentences. The focus part (subject) is put between “It is/was ... that...” * Ask pls to do exercise 2,3. - Correct pls’ mistakes.
