I/ Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

I/ Pronunciation: 17’
- T gives two examples
e.g.1: The thief who robbed the woman’s bag was stopped by the police.
e.g.2: The government hopes that people who robs in the public place will stop that bad action.
- T explains how to produce these sounds and gives model
- T reviews two rules of pronunciation and gives some examples
* The pronunciation of verbs ending “ed”
- /id/: - t, d: e.g. needed, painted
- /t/: - ch, p, k, f, s (ss), sh: e.g. watched, washed
- /d/: the rest: e.g. loved, played
* The pronunciation of nouns and verbs ending “s” or “es”
- /iz/: -ch, sh, o, x, z, ge, dge: e.g. changes, boxes
- /s/: - k, p, t, f, th: e.g. laughs, mouths
- /z/: the rest: e.g. listens, bags
1/ Listen and repeat
/pt/: stopped, jumped, stepped, trapped
/bd/: robbed, stabbed, grabbed, bribed
/ps/: stops, steps, maps, shops
/bz/: robs, bribes, rubs, clubs
- T reads the words containing these sounds
- T asks Ss to explain new words
2/ Practising sentences containing the sounds (in the textbook)
- T asks Ss to practise the sentences in pairs in 3 minutes
- T calls some Ss to read aloud
- T asks Ss to practise more at home
II/ Grammar: Cleft sentences: 27’
- T gives an example and ask Ss to analyse the structure
e.g. Lan/ bought/ a new computer/ yesterday.

- T provides 3 sentences to introduce “Cleft sentence”
A/ => It was Lan that (who) bought a new computer yesterday. => Subject focus
B/ => It was a new computer that Lan bought yesterday. => Object focus
C/ => It was yesterday that Lan bought a new computer. => Adverbial focus
- T presents 3 kinds of cleft sentence and asks Ss to elicit the form
1.Subject focus
It + be (is/ was) + focus part (Subject) + that (who) + V 
2. Object focus
It + be (is/ was) + focus part (Object) + that + S + V 
3. Adverbial focus
It + be (is/ was) + focus part (Adverb) + that + S + V + O 
- T asks Ss to do the exercises in the textbook in 5 minutes
Exercise 1: Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentence
1/ It was the boy who/that visited his uncle last month
2/ It was my mother who/ that bought me a present on my birthday
3/ It was Huong and Sandra who/ that sang together at the party
4/ It was Nam’s father who/ that got angry with him
5/ It was the boys who/ that played football all day long
6/ It was the girl who/ that received a letter from her friend yesterday
7/ It was his presence at the meeting that frightened the children
Exercise 2: Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the object of the verb
1/ It was English that the man is learning
2/ It was the book that the woman gave him
3/ It was the postcard that she sent her friend
4/ It was the book that Hoa borrowed from Long
5/ It was his grandfather that the little boy greeted in a strange language
6/ It was the policeman that the pedestrian asked a lot of questions
7/ It was the stranger that the dog barked at
Exercise 3: Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the adverbial modifier of the sentence
1/ It was in the garden that the boy hit the dog
2/ It was for tea that she made some cakes
3/ It was for him that his father repaired the bicycle
4/ It was on his birthday that she presented him a book
5/ It was in Britain that he met his wife
6/ It was from the shop that she bought that present
7/ It was at 8.00 a.m that the meeting started
- T calls Ss to go to the board and write down their answers
- T corrects the answers and gives comment
- T asks Ss to complete the the exercises into their notebooks
