Warm up (5mins)
T draws a plan on the bb and asks ss to fill in the blank
Feelings
T: Have you ever been embarrassed? When and how did it happen?
T explains "personal experiences" and leads to the new lesson.
* Pre- reading (10mins)
T gives ss handouts and guides them to play the game: Whisper
T controls the class and checks their answers.
T leads to the reading.
Examples:
S1: sad
S2: happy
S3: frightened
...
S1: Yes, I did. It happened when I was in grade 8. I missed the class...
Ss work in groups: hold the handout read it carefully and try to remember the sentence and then whisper to their group-mate one by one. The last member read the sentence aloud.
Ss match the handout with the pictures in the book.
The girl is smiling happily and the man is pointing to a wad of dollar.
The man gives money to the girl.
The girl is watching video clip on TV.
The girl is wondering about her money.
She is at the hatter's shop.
The girl is getting something from the boy's bag.
Ss describe the pictures again.
While- reading (20mins)
T reads or plays the recording of the reading text and let ss read the text after the tape.
T has ss do tasks.
Task 1: Filling in the blank
T explains some new words (make a fuss, sneaky, glanced, shy...) and asks ss to fill in the bank.
T comments and corrects
Answers: 1. glanced; 2. making a fuss; 3. embarrassing; 4. idols; 5. sneaky.
Task 2: Putting the pictures in the order
T goes around to check and help.
T corrects: 1. picture D; 2. picture B; 3. picture F; 4. picture E; 5. picture A; 6. picture C.
Task 3: Answering the questions
T goes around to check and help.
T comments and corrects
Answer:
She wished to have a red floppy hat.
So that she could buy the hat for herself.
A wad of dollar notes exactly like the ones her father had given her before.
Because she didn't like to make a fuss.
She bought the hat with it.
Ss both listen and read silently the text.
Ss find out all the words in the box appearing in the text and try to guess their meaning.
Ss work in pairs: Fill in the blank a suitable word or phrase.

Ss work in pairs: read the text again and try to put the pictures of the events in the correct order.
