Procedure: Teacher’s activities Time Students’ activities I. Organization: - T checks the number of students and asks Ss to make some class arrangement. 1 min - The monitor reports the number of students in his/her class to the teacher. II. Checking the old lesson: - T calls 2 sts to find the answers to the T’s questions orally. - asks some sts to give comments. - gives comments and marks. 5 mins - come to the board and answer - give comments - listen III. New lesson: Warm- up: - T asks Ss the following questions: Questions : 1. Do you like Tet? 2. What time of the year does Tet holiday take place? 3. What do you like most when Tet holiday comes? 4. What will you do to prepare for Tet holiday? 5. What do you think the main activities are?.... - T leads Ss to the new lesson. 4mins - Ss find the answers to the T’s questions. Before you read: Discussing Tet holiday - T asks the whole class to look at the picture on page 90 and discuss the three questions in pairs. - T goes around to offer help. - T calls on some Ss to present their answers and elicits comments from other Ss. T gives feedback if necessary. - Now Ss work in pairs to tell which of the activities in the book they enjoy doing most at Tet. Ss may also list out other activities they like doing at Tet. T reminds Ss to give reasons for their answers. Pre-teaching vocabulary + Lunar New Year: tết âm lịch + To fall between..and..: Rơi vào khoảng thời gian từ ..đến.. + To spread: kéo dài + To be full of: đầy, nhiều.. + Candied fruit: mứt + Positive comments: những lời nói tốt đẹp 5mins - look at the picture and discuss in pairs - present the answers - work in pairs - copy down on their notebooks While you read: Task 1: - T writes these words on the board: Grand, banner, sugared apples, agrarian, pray, excitement. - Then T instructs Ss to read the passage quickly and stop at the lines that contain these words to guess their meanings. - Ss guess the meaning of the words based on the contexts in the sentences. For example, to guess the meaning of grand (line 1, first paragraph) they pay attention to pagoda, happy year.. - T checks that Ss understand the words correctly. T can check Ss’ understanding by asking them to provide the Vietnamese equivalents to the words. If Ss find it difficult to guess the meaning of any word, T should elicit and give suggestions. Task 2: - T instructs Ss to use some strategies to do the task: + first, quickly read through the statements to get an idea about the topic. + read the first statemnet more carefully. Underline the key words to understand the main point. + search for the section of the text which deals with the idea or fact. - T asks Ss to work individually to do the task and discuss their answers with their peers. - T calls on some Ss to give their answers and asks them to explain their choices. If Ss cannot, T gets them to read the question carefully and gives hem some tips to do the task. - T asks Ss to work individually to do the task, then discuss their answers with their peers. - T calls on some Ss to write their answers on the board and asks them to explain their choices.
