Objectives : By the end of the lesson, sts will be able to: - Define the format and structure of an informal letter of invitation. - Write an informal letter of invitation. 2. Organization - T checks the number of students and asks Ss to make some class arrangement. II. Checking the old lesson - T calls on 1 student to talk about one of the parties he/she attended or organized. - T gives comments and mark. III. New lesson 1. Warm- up: Competition game - T prepares handouts of a jumbled letter in advance and divides the class into groups of 4. T distributes the handouts and introduces the task. - T declares the winners (The winner will be the group which has the quickest and correct answer.) - T gets sts to read the completed letter again and elicits the features of an invitation letter. - T tells sts that an invitation letter normally includes: + The event (birthday, wedding....) + The place (at school, at home..) + The time and date (.......) + The invitation itself (.......) Task 1 - T sets the scene: You are going to write a friendly letter to invite your classmates to a party that you hold. - T gets sts to work out the content of their letters by answering the questions in Task 1. - T calls on some sts to answer the questions and elicits more ideas from the class. T writes them on the board. Occasions for giving parties Birthday, graduation, wedding anniversary,..... Dressing codes Dresses, high-heel shoes, suits and ties...., jeans, T-shirt Presents Books, CDs, flowers, ties,.... 3. Task 2 - T gets sts to do the task individually and then compare their answers with a peer. - T calls on some sts to give answers and write them on the board. - T elicits comments from the class and gives the correct answers. - T helps sts revise the format of a personal letter by analyzing the letter that they have completed in task 2. Keys: 1. at my house 2. to come 3. refreshments 4. to cook 5. winners 6. by Monday 4. Task 3 - T gets sts to read Task 3 and work out the questions. In the meantime, T goes around to check and offer help. - T gets sts to write their letters in 8 minutes, based on the outlines they have produced. - T asks sts to get in pairs, exchange their letters and correct each other. - T goes around to offer help. 5. Feedback on sts’ writing - T chooses one letter and reads it to the class. - T elicits corrective feedback from the class and gives final comments afterwards. T draw sts’ attention to the format of the letter, the organization of ideas and language use. IV. Consolidation - T summarises the main points of the lesson. V. Homework - T asks sts to write an invitation letter about 100 words to invite his friend to come to his birthday party. VI. Feedback 1. Good points 2.
