Date of preparation: Period: 33 Lesson 33: “Could” and “Be able to” A. Aims 1. Objectives : By the end of the lesson, sts will be able to: - Tell the difference between “could” and “be able to” to express a past action. 2. Teaching aids: - blackboard, chalk, handouts - textbook, lesson plan B. Procedures Teacher’s activities Time Students’ activities I. Organization - T checks the number of students and asks Ss to make some class arrangement. II. Checking the old lesson - T calls on one student to go to the board and asks some questions about him/her. - T gives comments and marks. III. New lesson 1. Grammar : “Could” and “be able to” - T sets the situation and explains through the two examples: Eg: 1. He could run very fast when he was a boy. 2. We were able to get tickets for the match yesterday. - T elicits the comments from sts and makes clear that: + could is used to express an ability in the past. + be able to is used to express any complete success in the past. 2. Exercises: give sts some handouts and get them to do. 1. Suddenly all the lights went out. We ...... see anything. 2. The computer went wrong, but luckily Minh ...... put it right again. 3. There was a big party last night. You ........ hear the music half a mile away. 4. I learnt to read music as a child. Consolidation - T summarizes the main points of the lesson by asking the questions. V.
