 WARM-UP: Multiple choice exercise
- Give the following exercise for Ss to do. 
Read the following sentence then choose the best answer for each of the questions below:
*John robbed customers of their bags in shops in London.
1.The underlined part of the word “robbed” is pronounced as:

 2. The underlined part of the word “shops” is pronounced as:
 a. /z/	 b. /iz/	 c. /s/
- Call some to give answers to check with the whole class.

I. PRONUNCIATION: the clusters / pt/, /bd/, /ps/, bz/
1. Distinguish the sounds:
- Model the clusters for a few times and explain how to produce them.
- Read the words once for Ss to hear the words containing these clusters.
- Read them and ask Ss to repeat in chorus a few times then ask Ss to practise reading individually.
- Call some to read aloud to check and correct if necessary.
2. Practising sentences containing the target sounds.
- Ask Ss to work in pairs and take turn to read aloud the given sentences.
- Go around to listen and take notes of typical errors.
- Call some to read the sentences and provide feedback.

1. SUBJECT FOCUS:
a. Introduction:
- Give some examples and direct Ss how to make cleft sentences emphasizing the subject.
Ex 1. The boy hit the dog in the garden.
 It was the boy who hit the dog in the garden.
Ex 2. His absence from class always makes his teacher angry.
 It is his absence from class that always makes his teacher angry. 
- Ask Ss to draw out the format of cleft sentences with subject focus.
It + is ( was) + (focus)+ that (who/which)+ (Verb)

- Give Ss some multiple choice questions for Ss to practise individually:

 It is the piano that the young man is playing.
- Ask Ss to draw out the format of cleft sentences with object focus.

 Choose the best answer that has the same meaning as the root one.

- Give some examples and direct Ss how to make cleft sentences emphasizing the ADVERB.
 Ex 1: The boy hit the dog in the garden.
 -> It was in the garden that the boy hit the dog.
 EX 2: Mr. Pike usually gets up at 6 every morning.
 -> It is at 6 every morning that Mr. Pike usually gets up.
- Ask Ss to draw out the format of cleft sentences with ADVERD focus.
