OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: + Distinguish the sounds /s/ and /z/. + Pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly. + Use “to-infinitive” to express purposes and how to make “Wh-questions” appropriately. + Practice these skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing MATERIALS Textbook, computer, handout IV> ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS Students may find it difficult to pronounce the two sounds, especially /z/ when it is the final sound so teacher should prepare a lot of practice and help them. Moreover, students may make mistakes when using conjunctions and doing the exercises so teacher should also help them. PROCEDURES STEPS TIME TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES Check student’s homework 5minutes - Teacher gives some questions about Van Cao to check student’s homework. - Ask students to close their book. 1. Who is he? (give Van Cao’s photo) 2. When was he born? 3. Where did he live? - Teacher calls on some students to answer and checks their answers. - Listen to teacher. - Raise hands to answer teacher’s questions. Grammar 10minutes 2 minutes - Ask students to open their book and look at the book. Wh-Questions - Call on one student to give some wh-questions which he/she learnt. Introduce the form and the use of “Wh-questions”. Note: Wh-questions allow a speaker to find out more information about topics. - Give the forms for each question’s purpose and examples. Forms: 1. Ask for Subject What (thing) + Verb.? Who (person) Ex: What happened last morning? Who absents today? 2. Ask for information When (time) Where (place) + aux + S + V.? How (manner) Why (reason) Ex: Where do you live? When do you learn English? What did you do last night? - Ask students to give some examples with Wh-questions. Exercise 3 - Ask students to work in pair. - Ask students to do Exercise 3 in the textbook. - Give some notes when students start to do Exercise 3: tense is used in the sentence and problem is discussed. - Walk round and help if necessary. - Call on some students to read their answers in front of class and provide help them. - Give the answers for students Answer key: 1. Why do you like pop music? - Ask students to do next sentences at home. - Open the books Work individually Raise hands to answer teacher’s questions. Listen and Copy the notes Give some similar examples for each Wh-question. Work in pair to do Exercise 3 - Raise hands to give the answers. - Some students stand up reading the answer. One person reads the question and other reads the answer. Listen to the teacher check mistakes. Sugar - Teacher gives general rules: + The rules for verb + s or Noun +s : /s/ * /f/ ,/k/ , /p/ , /t/ , /θ/ + s : /s/ Ex: laughs, cooks, stops + /b/, /d/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /g/, /v/, /r/, /ŋ/ ,vowels + s: /z/ Ex: means, sings, climbs, stays. - Ask students to copy the notes on their notebook Come on the practice sentences: 1. Susan loves classical music. 2. I like to listen to jazz records. 3. My aunt likes to watch the film “The Sound of Music”. 4. But my cousin prefers going to concerts. 5. He’s won the first prize for singing folk songs. 6. I’d like a piece of bread and some peas, please. - Teacher reads once and asks students repeat - Call on some students read and provide help if necessary. To-infinitive: to express the purpose - Teacher introduces about the grammar. - Write some examples and underline the “to-infinitive” + She gets up early in the morning to cook breakfast for her family. + I often go swimming to have good health. + We study hard to pass the exams. - Teacher asks students: what is “to-infinitive” used to? - Teacher tells students that in these sentences “to-infinitive” in these examples, and “to-infinitive” are used to express purposes. - Ask students to give similar examples and calls on some students to read their examples in front of class. Exercise 1: Use the words in brackets to answer the questions. - Ask one student read loudly purpose of Exercise1. - Teacher models one example - Ask students to do next the sentences. - Call on some students to give their answers. - Give these correct answers for students. + Note: “to-infinitive” can be placed at the beginning.
