Revision: (10ms) Review : Relative Pronouns :Who , Whom , Which, That, Whose For persons SUBJECT WHO/ THAT OBJECT WHOM /THAT POSSESSIVE WHOSE For things WHICH/ THAT WHICH/ THAT Relative clauses: Ex: 1. This is the book. I bought it at the bookstore. -> This is the book which / that I bought at the bookstore. -> This is the book I bought at the bookstore. 2. The boy is my friend. He is studying over there. -> The boy who / that is studying over there is my friend. 3. The man is a famous doctor. His boy studies very well. -> The man whose boy studies very well is a famous doctor. THAT: 1. After: “all, any, anything , everything, few, the only one”: Ex: 1. I’ll do anything that I can 2. All that remains for me to do is to say goodbye. 3. He is the only boy that won the scholarship. 2. After “ Superlatives”: 1. It’s the most interesting book that I’ve ever read. 2. He is the tallest boy that I’ve ever seen. 3. Replace “ people” and “ things” 1. The boy that is studying over there is my friend. 2. This is the pen that I bought at the bookstore. Restrictive and Non-restrictive Relative Clauses Restrictive Relative Clauses: are necessary to modify the nouns before them because the nouns are not clear enough. Relative pronoun THAT can be used The man whom/ that you met yesterday is my father. Non-restrictive Relative Clauses: are NOT necessary to modify the nouns before them because the nouns are already clearly defined. Relative pronoun THAT can NOT be used Commas are used to set off Cannot omit relative pronoun This is my father, whom you met yesterday. Relative Clauses with a Preposition Eg: The picture is beautiful. You are looking at the picture. -> The picture at which you are looking is beautiful NOTES: 1. “THAT” isn’t used in Non-defining Relative clauses Wrong: Nam, that is studying over there, is my friend. Right: Nam, who is studying over there, is my friend. 2. “THAT” isn’t used after prepositions Wrong: She is the woman about that we are talking. Right: She is the woman about whom we are talking. 3. We can drop the relative pronoun when it is the object That is the girl [ that/ whom ] I share the apartment with. B. Practice ( 30ms) I. Activity 2(15ms) The organization: Topic sentence Tell what the chart is about; that is the time, the location, and what is being described: Supporting sentences - A sentence that sum up the general trend: - Sentences that describe the table in detail: Concluding sentence Summarises the main points or draws a relevant conclusion: However this sentence is optional Some expressions: * make up the largest/ smallest percentage * This is followed by * This ranks first/ second Verb tenses: * The chart shows the present situation -> simple present tense * The chart shows the past events -> simple past tense * Topic sentence -> simple present tense ( The chart presents / illustrates / shows ) III. Activity 3(15ms) -asks Ss to look at the chart above and complete the following table Topic sentence Tell what the chart is about; that is the time, the location, and what is being described: The chart describes the consumption of Fossil fuels (petroleum, coal, gas and oil) in the USA in 2003 Supporting sentences - A sentence that sum up the general trend: There was a difference in the amount as well as trend of consuming different sources of energy - Sentences that describe the table in detail: The consumption of gas made up the largest mount of this figure ( 65 million tons). This was followed by the consumption of coal (55 million tons). The third was the consumption of petroleum (39 million tons). Oil made up the slightly smaller proportion (30 million tons). Concluding sentence Summarises the main points or draws a relevant conclusion: These data may help the researchers or planners make suitable plans for using energy effectively. However this sentence is optional IV.
