A. OBJECTIVES:

 Educational aim: Educate Ss to have a great passion in studying.

 - At the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to appropriate about the result illiteracy in Viet Nam .

 - Develop such reading micro-skill as scanning for special ideas

and skimming for general information.

 - Use the information they have read to discuss and do the tasks.

 Lexical items: Words or phrases to related reading.

 Skills: Reading for gist and for specific information.

B. METHOD: Integrated, mainly communication.

C. TEACHING AIDS: Cassette, tape, textbook, lesson plan.

A. Objectives:
 Educational aim: Educate Ss to have a great passion in studying.
 - At the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to appropriate about the result illiteracy in Viet Nam .
 - Develop such reading micro-skill as scanning for special ideas
and skimming for general information.
 - Use the information they have read to discuss and do the tasks.
 Lexical items: Words or phrases to related reading.
 Skills: Reading for gist and for specific information.

Warm-up: (3 minutes)
- Asks Ss to answer some questions.
1. Do your countryside have many illiteracy people?
2. How do you often help children?
- Calls on some Ss to answer.
- Gives correct answers.
+ Today, we are going to read a paragraph talk about the fight against illiteracy.
- Listen and answer.
- Answer freely. 
- Listen.
Before you read: (10 minutes)
* Discussing the picture and saying.
- Asks Ss to look at the picture and asks them to answer some questions.
- Suggested questions.
1.What can you see in the picture?
2. Who is the teacher?
3. What about the students?
4. Where do you think the class is taking place? 
- Asks Ss to answer the questions.
- Walks around the class to help when necessary.
- Asks Ss to compare answers with friends.
- Calls some Ss to read their answers in front of the class.
- Corrected answers.
Pre-teaching
- Gives some new words and explains the meaning on the board.
Campaign(n) chiến dịch.
Eradicate: (v) xoá bỏ.
Ethnic minority: (n) dân tộc thiểu số
Honour: (n) danh dự (v) tôn kính

- Asks Ss to read after the teacher some times.
- Calls on some Ss to read aloud the words and phrases
- Asks Ss to make sentences with the above words to check their understanding.
Before you read.
- Work in groups.
- Answer the questions
- Compare answers with friends.
- Read aloud the answers before the class.
- Write correct answers:
This is a class for ethnic minority children in a mountainous region. Perhaps the class takes in the morning because I can see the sunlight outside. The children are learning to read and listening very attentively to their teacher, who is wearing a soldier’s uniform. May be he’s a border and works as a volunteer teacher. There is only one text book for each desk. It seems that this is very poor region because the class poorly equipped and the children are wearing old clothes. 
- Compare with T’s answers.
- Copy down.
- Read in chorus and individually.
- Read aloud the words
- Put sentences with the above words.
While you read (24 minutes)
Setting the scene: You are going to read a passage about education in mountainous areas and do the tasks in the textbook.
Task 1: (10 minutes)
* Introduce: Fill each blank with one part of speech of the word “volunteer’’.
- Guides Ss to make strategies.
- Asks Ss to read 5 expressions carefully to understand them .
- Plays cassette and ask Ss to listen once time.
- Asks Ss to read silently and do task 1
- Asks them to underline the key words to decide what information they need to find in the text.
- Plays cassette and ask Ss to listen twice times.
- Asks Ss to find the Vietnamese equivalent to the following expression and discuss with a partner.
- Walks around the class to help when necessary.
- Asks them to compare their answers with friends 
- Calls Some Ss to read aloud their answers. 
- Gives corrected answer.
While you read.
- Listen and prepare doing tasks.
Task 1
- Find the Vietnamese equivalent to the following expression and discuss with a partner.
- Work individually.
- Listen once and twice times
- Compare the answers with friends.
- Write the correct answers:
1.Phổ cập giáo dục tiểu học.
2.Hội khuyến học Việt Nam.
3 Xóa mù chữ
4.Kỹ thuật canh tác.
5. Kế hoạch hoá gia đình.
- Practice the answers in front of the class.
Task 2: (8 minutes)
* Introduce: You are to read the passage and choose A,B,C or D most adequately sum up the whole passage. 
- Guides Ss to make some strategies to do the task.
- Asks Ss to read carefully sentences to understand them and choose the best answer.
- Ask Ss to read the text again and try to summarize it in the Ss’ own words.
- Suggested answers:
- Walks around the class to help when necessary.
 - Asks Ss to compare their answers with friends.
- Calls Some Ss to read their answers in front of the class.
- Gives correct answers:
Task 2
- Read the passage carefully and choose A,B,C or D most adequately sum up the whole passage. 
- Work individually.
- Try to summarize it in the Ss’ own words.
- Compare the answer with friends.
- Read aloud the answer in front of the class.
- Compare with T’s answer.
- Write correct answer: 
D: ( The fight against illiteracy)
- Option A is too general, Option B and C are too specific.
Task 3 : (6 minutes)
Answer the questions.
- Guides Ss to use some strategies to do the task.
- Asks Ss to read carefully questions to understand them.
- Asks Ss to read scan the text again and underline the key words to decide what information they need to find in the text to answer the questions.
- Asks Ss to work in groups and then discuss the following couples. 
- Walks around the class to help when necessary.
- Asks Ss to compare their answers with friends.
- Calls Some Ss to read their answers.
- Gives correct answers.
Task 3
- Work in groups.
- Read carefully questions to
understand them.
- Read scan the text again and underline the key words to decide what information they need to find in the text to answer the questions.
- Compare answers with friends.
- Read aloud the sentences in front of the class.
- Write correct answers:
1. 94% of population.
2. The campaign for illiteracy eradication.
3. 600 in 2000 and 800 in 2001.
4. They willingly / voluntarily spent their vacations teaching ethnic minority illiterate people to read and write.
5. Illiteracy will soon be eradicated.
After you read : (7 minutes)
- Asks Ss to discuss the questions and answer.
1. Are there any illiterate people in your neighborhood?
2. What do you think we should do to help them read write?
- Walk around the class to help when necessary.
- Asks Ss to compare their answers with friends.
- Calls Some Ss to read aloud their answers.
- Feedbacks and gives correct answers.
Homework. (1 minutes)
- Asks Ss to do the tasks again and summarize the main points of the lesson 
- Prepare the new lesson. 
 After you read
- Work in groups
- Discuss the questions and answer.
- Compare answers with friends.
1. Yes, but not many. Most of them are poor working people.
2. I think we should explain the disadvantages of being illiterate to them . At the same time, we should private the convenient condition for them to go the classes for illiteracy eradication. 
- Practice the answers .
 Homework. 
- Do the tasks again and summarize the main points of the lesson 
- Prepare the new lesson.
