Lesson Plan (grade 11 – advanced) Period : 84 Preparation date : 30/01/2008 Unit : 10 Lesson : writing Aims : By the end of the lesson, the students know more about different places in the world By the end of the lesson, the students are able to write about a certain place. Structures : - Its main source of electricity comes from traditional thermal power stations , while water power stations generate 6.3 % IV- Teaching aids: - textbook - handouts - Sheets of paper - chalk and board Techniques : writing-based Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. warm-up (7’) Games: Noughts and Crosses – Geography Quiz - Draw a square of 9 numbered boxes on the board. - divide SS into two groups, Noughts and Crosses - Ask the groups to choose a number and answer the question. - with a correct answer, the box is marked with a 0 a X of the group. If the group cannot answer it, the other group has the chance to give answers and owns the box. The first group to have 3 boxes (0s or Xs) in a line ( across, down or diagonal) will win the game - check SS’ understanding of instructions and let them start the game. - declare the winner. Transition: to introduce a certain place, we need to provide more information. Today we will learn how to write about a certain place. - write down on the board: These are the questions: 1. which energy source (electricity, wood, or coal) is used by half the world’s population for cooking and heating. 2. Unit 10: Writing about Places Poster, chalk and board. 2. Pre- writing (7’) 1. Brainstorming: - Ask Ss what kind of information they would like to know about a place in order to elicit essential features for the writing. - note down SS ideas on the board. 2. Fill in a table (task a, p. 146) - Ask SS to read the paragraph about The Kingdom of Thailand and complete the table with correct information. - Tell SS to compare answers in pairs and then go over the answers with the class. Important information about a place Chalk and board 3. while-writing (20’) Activity 1: Outline of the paragraph ( task b, p.146) - Ask SS to skim the paragraph again and complete the brief outline of the description. - Tell SS to compare answers in small groups and then check with the whole class. The paragraph includes three main parts: Activity 2: Gap-filling - Put SS into pairs, and give each pair a handout of a gapped description of the information in table 1 - Tell SS to study the table and compete the description with suitable information. - when they have finished, tell SS to compare answers in small groups. - go over the answers with the class. Activity 3: Making sentences - ask SS to practice writing each sentence as guided in the structure models. - call on some students to go to bb to write down their writing - T corrects them 1.
