CLEFT sentences in the passive
- Explains Ss how to use:
Structures: It + be + subject + that + past participle.
Example:
Active: My father gave me a lot of toys.
Passive: It was I that was given a lot of toys.
Active: He described his home town in his novel.
Passive: .
Both.and, not only .. but also, either  or , neither .. nor
1) Both.and
a) Both + noun + and + noun
Example: She plays both tennis and badminton.
b) Both + verb + and + verb
Example: He both sings and dances.
c) Both + adj + and + adj 
Example: She is both beautiful and intelligent
d) Both + adverbial phrase + and + adverbial phrase.
Example: We go to school both in the morning and in the afternoon.
2) Not only .. but also
Example: 
There are problems not only with teachers but also with students themselves.
Either  or
Example: 
Well, I think she’s either Russian or Chinese
3) Neither .. nor
Example: 
I am neither rich nor poor.

Exercise 1:
*Introduce: 
- Asks Ss to combine the sentences using both and either ..or, neither  nor.
- Gives Ss some new words and write them on the board then explain the meaning.
- Guides Ss to make some strategies.
- Asks Ss to read carefully sentences.
- Asks Ss to work individually and then discuss the following pairs.
Example:
Tom was late. So was Ann.
- Both Tom and Ann was late.
She didn’t write and she didn’t phone.
She neither wrote nor she phoned
- Walks around the class to help when necessary.
- Suggested answer.
- Asks Ss to compare their answer with friends.
- Calls on Ss to answer and practice the sentences in front of the class.
- Corrected answer.
Exercise 1:
- Combine the sentences using both and either ..or, neither  nor.
- Copy down the notebook
- Read carefully sentences.
- Work individually and then discuss the following pairs.
- Compare the answer with friends.
- Write the correct answers on the board.
1) Both Jim and Carol are on holiday.
2) George neither smokes nor drinks.
3) Nether Jim nor Carol has got a car.
4) The film was both long and boring.
5) That man’s name is either Richard or Robert.
