Lesson Plan (grade 11 – advanced) Period 124: Preparation date : 17 /04/2008 Unit 15: Lesson : Speaking Aims : - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to ask for and give information about tourist destinations. Teaching aids: - textbook - Handouts - chalk - cards Techniques : - skill-based ( listening, speaking) Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. warm-up (5’) Games: Kim’s game - divide the class into two groups, Sun and Moon - Hang a poster containing these pictures up on the board. - get SS to look at the pictures for a few seconds and try to remember as many of them as possible - remove the poster and ask SS to name the places corresponding to the pictures that they can remember - within groups, SS write down the places on a given poster. - the first group to finish within with more correct places is the winner - ask SS if they have been to nay of these places - elicit kinds of information a tourist needs to know before he visit a certain place. Transition now we’re going to learn how to ask for and give information of these kinds in our speaking lesson today. -Write down on the board : P.124: Unit 15 : speaking Handouts 2. Pre- Speaking (10’) Elicit for and introducing useful language. Asking for and giving information 1. could you tell me what’s the weather like in Hue in May? . Oh / well , it’s hot and sunny 2. do you know the best time of year to visit Hanoi? . yes, you should visit Hanoi between November and March. 3. How about / what about transportation? . you can travel in the city 4. what kind of clothes should I bring along? . summer clothes should be best 5. could you recommend any specialties / places to visit . you must be .. . you should definitely try / visit . . Post-Speaking (10’) Activity 1: Asking for and giving information (task b, textbook, p 205-206) -Put the SS into pairs. -within pairs ,SS practice the dialogue. -Assign some pairs to role-play the dialogue in front of the whole class. -Make corrections in terms of intonation, pronunciation and grammar. Activity 2: telling your last visit to a sightseeing spot (task c, textbook, p.206) - put SS into groups of four - Ask SS to take turn telling their last visit to a sightseeing spot - give each student a copy of the table below - get SS to complete the table about their group members’ visits. - monitor the class unobtrusively and give help if necessary. - call on some group representatives to report what they have noted down about one of their friends’ visits Jigsaw Reading (handouts) -Give each student an invitation card -Ask SS to imagine they were to celebrate their next birthdays. -Get SS to complete their invitation cards -Get SS to stand up and give the card to the invited person in the class -Ask SS how many invitation cards they have got -Declare the most invited and the least invited. Sample exchanges in front of the whole class: T: I’d like to visit Hanoi next year. What do you think is the best time to visit? S: oh, as far as I know, you should visit Hanoi between November and March. T: How about clothes? What kind of clothes should I bring along? 5. Homework (1’) Writing about a city Ask SS to write a short essay about a city of their own choice following the sample writings in the jigsaw reading above .
