Unit 12: The Asian Games 
Lesson: Reading
Class: 11/7
Time allotted: 45’
Aim: To help students learn and practice sub-skills of reading.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
	- Guess the meaning in context
- Scan for specific information
- Read the passage for comprehension
- Remember some events about Asian games.
Teaching aids and materials: Textbook, blackboard, pictures, handouts, and posters.

I. Warm-up
(5’)
Kim’s Game:
Objective: to involve Ss in the lesson and lead in the topic of the reading.
- T divides class into 2 teams: A & B.
- T gives the instructions:
+ T shows in turn 6 pictures of sports.(Appendix)
+ Ss look at them, find their names and remember them in 30 seconds.
+ Each team’s representatives will go to the blackboard and write as many names as possible.
+ After 2 mins, which group has more correct names will be the winner.
- T allows Ss to play game.
- T checks Ss’ answers by sticking the pictures one by one on the blackboard.
- T declares the winner and gives gift.
Expected names:
- football
- fencing
- boxing
- table tennis
- volleyball
- swimming
Lead in:
- T points to the pictures and asks Ss:
“Are these sports played in Asian Games?”
Ss: Yes
- T introduces: Yes, these are sports in the Asian Games. To understand more about the Asian Games we will study the lesson today.”

1. Pre-teach Vocabulary:
Objective: to help Ss learn some basic words before doing tasks.

1. Activity 1: Gap filling
(Task 1 in textbook)
Game: Lucky number
Objective: to check the new words and help Ss read the passages and practice guessing meaning in context.
- T sticks the poster on the blackboard:

- T divides class into 2 teams: A and B
- T gives the instructions:
 + On the poster, there are 9 numbers (3 lucky numbers: 1, 6, 8)
 + 6 remaining numbers correspond with 6 sentences in task 1
 + Each team in turn chooses the number and gives the answer
 + Each team will get 1 point for each correct answer
 + If they choose the lucky number, they will get 2 points without answering question
 + Which team has more points will be the winner
- T allows Ss to play game
- T declares the winner.

2. Activity 2: Table completion

Objective: to help Ss practice the skill of scanning for specific information.
- T asks Ss to work individually
- Ask Ss to read the passage and complete the missing information.
- T moves around class and help Ss if necessary.
- T calls on some Ss to give their answers.
- T asks Ss to show where they can find the answers.
- T listens and corrects Ss’ answers.
Expected answer:
(1) 1951
(2) The 2nd Asian Games in Manila, Philippines.
(3) 1958
(4) Squash, rugby, fencing, and mountain biking.
(5) 2002
3. Activity 3: Comprehension questions
(Task 3 in textbook)
Objective: to help Ss practice reading comprehension skill.
- T asks Ss to work in pairs.
- T asks Ss to read the whole passage and answer 3 questions (in textbook)
- Ask Ss to compare the answers with their partners
- T goes around the class and gives help.
- T invites some Ss from each pair to give their answers.
- T asks Ss to show the evidences that help them decide the answers and rewrite the answers on the blackboard.
- T corrects Ss’ answers.
Expected answer:
1. The purpose of the Asian Games is to develop intercultural knowledge and friendship within Asia.
2. There were 9,919 participants took part in the 14th Asian Games.
3. Vietnamese athletes won gold medals in bodybuilding, billiards, women’s karatedo at the Busan Games.

IV. Post-Reading
(10’)
Write-it-up:
Objective: to help Ss use new vocabularies and information from the reading passage to summarize the main ideas.
- T asks Ss to work in groups of 4.
- Ss are asked to write a short paragraph summarizing the main events and information about Asian Games. 
- T gives Ss some questions for their writing (T delivers the handouts to Ss):
1- How often do the Asian Games take place? What is the purpose?
2- How are the 14th Asian Games compared with the 1st Asian Games (the number of athletes, countries, and sports)? What kinds of sport used at the 1st Asian Games?
3- How was the spirit of Vietnamese participants in this event? How many gold medals did they win?
4- What is hope for Vietnamese sport?
- T asks Ss to connect the answers of these questions to make their own paragraph. 
- T asks Ss to discuss and share the ideas in their groups.
- After 5 minutes, T calls some Ss from each group to read out their paragraph.
- T listens and gives comments.
Homework (1’)
- T asks Ss to learn the new words
- Ask Ss to search the internet to find more information about the Asian Games.
- T reminds Ss to prepare the next lesson (Speaking, p.139)
