 Lesson 2: LANGUAGE FOCUS

1. Aim: Studying the sounds /pt/, /bd/, /ps/, /bz/ and cleft sentences.

2. Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will able to distinguish the sounds /pt/, /bd/, /ps/, /bz/ and cleft sentences- subject focus, object focus, adverbial focus.

3. Teaching aids: text book, teacher’s book.

It was + Adverbial + that + ( adverbial focus)

 Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentence.
Key:
1. It was the boy who visited his uncle last month.
2. It was my mother who bought me a present on my birthday.
3. It was Huong and Sandra who sang together at the party.
4. It was Nam’s father who got angry with him.
5. It was the boys who played football all day long.
6. It was the girl who received a letter from her friend yesterday.
7. It was his presence at the meeting that frightened the children.

ask students to do in groups A and B
let students play the games in the big teams A and B

Teacher reads the original sentences, and stand in the side of group A, the whole group has to read aloud the cleft sentences. While other group has to choose one person to write down on the board. One mark for A if A can read aloud the right sentence. One mark for B if B can write down the right sentence. teacher does the same and change the standing position ( side A or side B)

 Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the object of the sentence.
Key:

2. It was the book that the woman gave him.
3. It was the postcard that she sent her friend.
4. It was the book that Hoa borrowed from Long.
5. It was his grandfather whom the little boy greeted in a strange language.
6. It was the policeman whom the pedestrian asked a lot of questions.
7. It was the stranger whom the dog barked at.

play the second round of the game:
teacher will call randomly 4 students in group A to do sentences 1, 3, 5, 7
then 2, 4, 6, 7 for group B
groups will get one mark with one correct sentences 
count the total marks
the winner will have more marks than the other
